Russia’s main tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod is taking on major repairs of damaged T-90M tanks, adding pressure to a factory already responsible for new production.

A train carrying heavily damaged T-90Ms was photographed heading toward the company’s plant in Nizhny Tagil. Analysts say the work was traditionally handled by Russia’s military armored repair network, but that system has weakened, leaving Uralvagonzavod to handle more extensive refurbishment.

The development could make assessments of Russian tank output harder. Oryx analyst Jakub Janovsky noted that repaired vehicles or upgraded tanks could potentially be counted as new production, complicating estimates of how many genuinely new vehicles are being manufactured.

The company continues delivering T-90M and upgraded T-72B3M tanks, including versions featuring additional protection against drones. Some T-90Ms are also being equipped with the Arena-M active protection system.

The shift highlights ongoing pressure from workforce shortages, sanctions and wartime demand on Russia’s armored vehicle industry today.

Spain’s Army has received its first ARACNE counter-drone systems, marking a new step in strengthening protection against unmanned aircraft.

The equipment was delivered to the 71st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Regiment, the service’s lead unit for counter-drone capabilities. Developed by Spanish companies Indra and EM&E Group, with TRC as a partner, ARACNE combines radar, radio-frequency sensors, electro-optical cameras and command software to detect, classify and respond to drones.

The regiment has completed operational evaluation of the system’s soft-kill function, which can disrupt drone communications or navigation without physical engagement. Testing of its hard-kill capability is planned during the Army’s next ATLAS exercise.

Spain’s program covers 14 ARACNE systems, including fixed and mobile configurations. The mobile version uses VAMTAC ST5 vehicles, allowing protection of critical infrastructure or military units.

The program was valued at more than €30 million and represents Spain’s first major procurement dedicated specifically to counter-drone capabilities for the armed forces.

Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna says NATO could close Russia’s access to the Baltic Sea within hours if Moscow initiated military action against an alliance member.

Speaking to The Times, Tsahkna said NATO could rapidly assemble a force of about 50,000 experienced personnel and use existing plans to restrict access through the Gulf of Finland. The corridor is strategically important because Russian vessels from St. Petersburg use it to reach the wider Baltic, while the route also supports maritime connections with Kaliningrad.

According to the report, 60% of Russia’s seaborne oil exports pass through the Baltic route, highlighting its economic importance.

Tsahkna stressed that such a measure would follow a Russian military escalation that triggers NATO’s Article 5 collective-defense mechanism, rather than serve as a pre-emptive move.

NATO has expanded its eastern-flank posture since then, with Finland and Sweden joining the alliance and strengthening its position around the Baltic Sea.

Lithuania is deploying a company-sized unit of its Armed Forces to support the State Border Guard Service along the border with Russia’s Kaliningrad region. Troops will patrol border areas alongside VSAT officers, with mobile patrols, checkpoints, and Military Police escorts available if needed.

The deployment began October 8 and is initially planned for two weeks, with an extension possible if required. Lithuanian authorities describe the measure as preventive and part of routine cooperation between state institutions. The move is intended to strengthen border-security capabilities and maintain readiness amid the wider regional security situation.

The U.S. Air Force has confirmed the first flight test release of its Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile, or HACM, during a test activity in Australia.

The Royal Australian Air Force released a HACM flight-test unit over a designated Australian range, providing engineers with data from realistic flight conditions. Officials have not disclosed the exact test date, range, aircraft used, flight duration, or whether the scramjet-powered vehicle completed powered flight after release.

HACM is being developed by RTX and Northrop Grumman under the U.S.-Australian Southern Cross Integrated Flight Research Experiment, known as SCIFiRE. The missile uses a rocket booster before transitioning to a scramjet-powered cruise phase designed for speeds above Mach 5.

The milestone follows schedule pressure and earlier delays. The Air Force has reduced planned rapid-prototyping flights from seven to five and is seeking to move toward fielding during fiscal 2027, making upcoming tests important for key future development decisions.

The U.S. Navy has awarded five prototype agreements worth $743.57 million to advance the Nuclear-Armed Sea-Launched Cruise Missile, or SLCM-N.

Announced by Strategic Systems Programs, the agreements cover missile development, flight-integration work, and launch-canister systems designed for Virginia-class submarines. Three industry teams will compete on missile and integration efforts, while two suppliers will develop compatible launch hardware. Work is scheduled through December 2027.

The program is intended to provide Washington with an additional regional nuclear deterrence option, particularly in scenarios involving Russia or China and their non-strategic nuclear capabilities. The weapon is expected to use a W80-series warhead, although its final range, speed, dimensions, and other performance details remain unconfirmed.

The latest awards build on earlier SLCM-N contracts, bringing publicly announced program agreements to more than $1.1 billion. Current planning envisions limited deployment by September 2032 and initial operational capability around September 2034, while Congress continues supporting accelerated development overall.

Australia has received its second shipment of U.S.-built M142 HIMARS launchers, arriving two years ahead of schedule. The systems will strengthen the Australian Army’s 10th Fires Brigade, while Canberra plans to expand the force to up to 90 launchers across two long-range fires regiments.

The expansion is part of a broader effort to develop Australia’s land-based precision fires capability. HIMARS can employ GMLRS and Precision Strike Missile (PrSM) mu*****ns, with current PrSM plans providing ranges of up to about 500 kilometers. Australia is also developing domestic missile production to improve supply resilience.

General Dynamics Land Systems and Primordial Labs have signed a new agreement to bring Anura natural-language software to future U.S. Army combat vehicles.

The technology is being considered for platforms including the M1 Abrams, next-generation XM30 infantry fighting vehicle and Stryker. Anura allows crews to use spoken commands to manage selected onboard systems, including sensors, displays, communications and compatible uncrewed platforms.

The system operates directly on the vehicle without requiring cloud connectivity, allowing it to remain available when external communications are limited. Importantly, the initial integration will not control weapon firing or fire-control functions.

The move comes as future armored vehicles are designed with smaller crews while carrying increasingly sophisticated electronics and autonomous systems. The XM30, for example, is planned around a two-person crew.

Anura is not currently installed on XM30 prototypes undergoing Army testing, but General Dynamics plans to explore the technology for future vehicle upgrades.

The U.S. Army is expanding its Next Generation Command and Control, or NGC2, network to I Corps in the Indo-Pacific under a five-year effort valued at up to $1.8 billion.

The program is designed to connect soldiers, sensors, command posts and weapons through a shared digital architecture, giving commanders a more unified view of information across widely dispersed units. I Corps is the next major step after NGC2 was tested at division level.

Anduril will provide the common data layer under an initial $162.8 million award, while additional contracts worth about $93.6 million support applications covering command and control, intelligence, fires, maneuver, sustainment and force protection.

The Pacific presents a demanding environment, with formations potentially separated by thousands of miles and communications facing disruption. The Army says NGC2’s modular architecture can help different systems share information while allowing new technologies to be added more quickly.

The expansion marks a significant step toward a more connected, software-driven Army across the Indo-Pacific.
