আজ ঐতিহাসিক গোলাঘাটি কৃষক বিদ্রোহ দিবস।
আজকের দিনে ১৯৪৮ সালে মহাজনী শাসনের বিরুদ্ধে গণমুক্তি পরিষদ এবং কৃষক সমিতির নেতৃত্বে গোলাঘাটির ভক্ত ঠাকুর পাড়ায় বিদ্রোহ গড়ে তুলে কৃষকরা। এই বিদ্রোহ কে দমন করতে ঐদিন বুড়িমা নদীর তীরে ১৩'জন কৃষক কে গুলি করে হত্যা করে তৎকালীন মহারানী কাঞ্চনপ্রভা শাসিত রিজেন্সি প্রশাসনের পুলিশ বাহিনী।

Inspiring Legacy: From a fearless intellectual to being the voice of India’s labouring millions, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy exemplified the journey “from the classroom to the comradeship of the world.” His life offers a blueprint for principled leadership rooted in people’s everyday struggles.

Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy (born 25 March 1942) is perceived as the General Secretary who re-energised the Communist Party of India during his 2012-2019 stewardship, combining organisational rigour with broad-based coalitions and giving India’s Left a confident public voice.

Sparks of a Revolutionary Spirit
Even as a eighth-grade pupil in Kurnool, young Sudhakar led classmates in a strike for blackboards and chalk—his first initiation to mass action. That early instinct for mobilisation only deepened at Osmania University Law College, where he was elected students union General Secretary and turned the campus into a red bastion.

Vanguard of Students and Youth
Elevated to General Secretary of the All-India Students’ Federation (AISF) in 1966 and again in 1969, he criss-crossed the country orchestrating 62-day strikes for hostels, scholarships and social-welfare measures and succeeding in achieving them. As part of the struggles he was jailed numerous times including in central jails of Lucknow and Calcutta.

By 1972 he was President of the All-India Youth Federation (AIYF) and front-lined the campaign that helped secure voting rights for Indian youth at 18—down from 21—through the 61st Constitutional Amendment.

The Parliamentarian of the Working Class
Twice elected to the Lok Sabha from Nalgonda (1998 & 2004), he became Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour, whose path-breaking recommendations on social security for unorganised workers and gratuity for private-school teachers led to the acceptance of key bills. His interventions—on fluoride contamination in Nalgonda, farmers suicides, black money, and the 2G scam—made him the moral compass of the house. He led massive movements on ground including the electricity price agitation in Andhra Pradesh in which he was targeted in police firing but the bullets just missed his head as they whizzed past his head. The agitation practically ended World Bank manipulative control over the Indian state. He served as Andhra Pradesh State Secretary (1997-2005), CPI, during this valiant movement. As Deputy General Secretary from 2008 he focused on expanding the base of left among youth especially student movements in Universities by bringing together class and caste struggles.

Helm of the CPI
Elected General Secretary at the 21st Party Congress in March 2012, he stressed cadre education, mass-organisation expansion and united-Left street struggles, while reinforcing secular fronts against rising communal politics. Under his watch the party’s membership and women-and-youth wings recorded their fastest growth since the 1990s.

Global Footprint
He carried India’s tricolour—and the red flag—to more than 40 nations, addressing the United Nations General Assembly, starting with student congresses from USSR to Mongolia and going on to participating in fraternal parties across the globe from the USA & Italy to Vietnam & Japan. These exchanges burnished CPI’s international cooperation and sharpened its strategy at home.

Pen and Podium
A magnetic orator in Telugu, Hindi and English, he also wrote extensively—essays, pamphlets, articles and books that decode Contemporary Marxism for lay readers and campaigners alike. His speeches remain masterclasses in clarity, empathy and ideological conviction, inspiring a generation of organisers.

Red salute to you Comrade Sudhakar Reddy Suravaram. You led an exemplary life in every way. Now you rest, but the ideals you exemplified will live on through all those inspired by you. You have given us a very big family - the entire working class movements across the world. Everyone who responds to ‘comrade’ has been like family to you and will be for us too.
