Bateshwar is a village in the Bah Tahsil of Agra District, situated at a bend of the Jamuna, 41 miles south-east of Agra city.
http://www.bateshwar.in http://www.bateshwar.co.uk Bateshwar draws its name from the main Bateshwarnath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Local folklore and ancient legends describe a Shiv worshiping ascetic who resided here under a magnificent Banyan tree (Bat in Sanskrit), and raised a shrine to Shiva that came to be known as Bat-Ishwar; the banyan lord. The journey from Bat-Ishwar to the current Bateshwar was but a short one.

Reflecting serene....
Bateshwar - This ancient temple complex consisting of more than 108 temples dedicated to lord Shiva is at the banks of river Yamuna.
About 70 kms from agra, the place is named after the presiding deity Bateshwar Mahadev.
For me this place was more than .
Oh yeah, I also got to know that this is the ancestral village of our former Prime Minister Lt. Sh. Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Day’s end at Bateshwar, on the banks of the Yamuna, stand 40 temples in this quaint, friendly and energetic village. One of Uttar Pradesh’s little gems.

Returning to Bateshwar for the first time in 10 years I was struck just how pleasant it is to visit a small temple town where charlatans don’t run the show. This was actually the second puja in less than a week which was held in my name, having gone my entire life til now without such a fuss over me, and this gentleman was the charming priests who performed the rituals in one of the 40 or so Shiva Temples on the banks of the Yamuna. Thank you to the delightful Chambal Safari Lodge - Mela Kothi, for organising such a wonderfully executed and curated tour of this charming and friendly village.

What's your view on a door, are they to shut you out or to let you in? The equivalent of glass half full or half empty maybe? However it is the plight of many doors throughout India, to be made part of a photo exhibition. We found this one whilst exploring from our base at lodge. Holipura is the first declared heritage village in the state of UP, it houses a wealth of history and interesting stories, and doors for you to venture beyond!
