In a significant step towards preserving and restoring Karnataka’s rich historical legacy, Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, H. K. Patil, today visited the National Museum and personally reviewed the rare collection of historically significant artefacts belonging to the ancient heritage town of Lakkundi in Gadag district.

The collection comprises more than 150 invaluable artefacts that were formally handed over on 16 October 1976 by Shri D.K. Hebboor and Shri T.K. Nayak to the then Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi. The collection includes ancient weapons, rare gold and silver coins, finely crafted ornaments, and historically important manuscripts that stand as testimony to the rich cultural and civilisational heritage of Karnataka.

During the visit, the Hon’ble Minister held discussions regarding the preservation and public exhibition of these rare artefacts, which are presently secured under protected custody. He stated that necessary coordination would be undertaken with the National Museum authorities for the establishment of a dedicated gallery in New Delhi to facilitate public viewing of the collection.

The Hon’ble Minister further informed that official consultations and legal procedures would be initiated at the earliest with the Government of India and the Archaeological Survey of India towards facilitating the permanent return of these invaluable artefacts to Karnataka, with special priority being accorded to their restoration to Lakkundi, their place of origin.
