स्वर्ण पाश में लोकतंत्र

पाँच सितारा रिसोर्ट में बंधक,
जनसेवक जननायक विधायक,
सुख-सुविधा व भोग-विलास युक्त,
स्वर्ण पाश में बंधे नायक ।

जिस देश की जनता के सेवक,
पाँच सितारों में सोते,
उस देश की जनता की सुविधा,
काश! सात सितारों वाले होते।

महान लोकतत्र को गिरवी,
देश के महान लोग रखते हैं,
कोई कुछ नहीं कर सकता,
सभी सिर्फ हाथ मलते हैं ।

इस देश की व्यवस्था में अब,
वोट, समर्थन सब बिकते हैं,
संवैधनिक पदों पर बैठे लोग,
हाथ पर हाथ धरे रहते हैं ।

लोकतंत्र में पड़ी स्वर्ण बेंड़ी से,
कोई 'आज़ाद' आज़ाद कराएँगे ?
काले अंग्रेजों को सुधारने,
कोई गाँधी - सुभाष फिर आएँगे ?

Who will be the next chief minister? That had been a moot question much before the verdict that sent Jayalalithaa to jail.

While names of many diehard loyalists have been floated, state finance minister O Panneerselvam has emerged the strongest probable.

Having served as chief minister for six months from September 2001 when Jayalalithaa had to step down because of the Tansi case, Panneerselvam may clinch it for his record of being tried and tested. He has remained more loyal than expected, and never made any effort to be remembered as an ex-CM.

It was as an acknowledgement of this loyalty that Jayalalithaa rewarded him with the key portfolios of finance and public works when the party came to power in 2011. Party insiders say that in the recent past Panneerselvam has been the liaison person between Jayalalithaa and other ministers and senior partymen. That he enjoys the confidence of Sasikalaa is an added advantage.

I think AAP is better choice than any political party. Every party had its own chance but failed considerably. Arvind Kejriwal is certainly a man of vision. He seems to reach a large section of community which is Aam Aadmi. Besides he is very clear in his approach and don't tolerate any kind of fraud or corruption like recently he cancelled the nomination of a party candidate who was found guilty. He is here for a change not to earn money and power. He even risks victory by directly fighting Sheila Diksh*t.. No other party can be as bold and as blunt as him.

Seven o'clock Wednesday morning in Varanasi. Noon in Varanasi. Three o'clock Thursday afternoon in Varanasi. Midnight in Varanasi. They seem to be everywhere, round the clock — a bunch of people, in twos and threes and fours, wearing uniform white caps, divvying up the tasks of waving either dusty-white flags or brownish brooms, atop the sunbaked dividers of the city roads. They are volunteers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), impervious to time and the sun that has everyone else scurrying for shade or going into hiding.

In Varanasi in the week gone by, it was difficult to wander 20 metres without encountering an AAP volunteer — distributing pamphlets, chanting slogans, showcasing the party symbol (broom) and talking to voters. If the sun and long hours are a test of the will, AAP has passed with flying colours in Varanasi.

The sea of white caps foretells a rousing climax to the biggest electoral show on earth as Varanasi goes to the polls on Monday — thanks to a dogged fight between BJP's choice for prime minister, Narendra Modi, and Arvind Kejriwal, the protagonist of AAP and former chief minister of Delhi.
