AISA stands in Solidarity with demands of The Ashoka University Student Government! It’s Time To Join The Dots And Stand With Each Other Against The Grand Design To Finish Universities!
Let’s Stand United Against the Architecture to Harass, Intimidate and Eliminate Intellectuals, Academic Engagement and Critical Thinking!
Fascists Always Fear Universities And Intellectuals
“The state has been conquered! But not yet the universities! The intellectual paramilitaries are coming in. Raise your flags!” - announced the Germany’s fascist student group after the N***s took power in January 1933. Following this they went around organising public events to burn books, ransacked libraries and attacked teachers.
On 24 May, the day after Modi won a second term in 2019, a BJP General Secretary wrote in an op-ed in the Indian Express: “Under Modi-II, the remnants of the pseudo-secular/liberal cartel need to be discarded from the country’s academic, cultural and intellectual landscape.” The eerie similarities of what is unfolding in India today with N**i Germany can hardly be missed!
Save India’s Universities from being “conquered” by the fascists!
First, they came for HCU, then for JNU, later AMU, Jamia, DU and now to any and every university, private or public, that is engaging in and promoting critical thinking, democratic principles and constitutional values. At this dark hour, AISA stands with protesting students and teachers of Ashoka. AISA stands in solidarity with The Ashoka University Student Government’s protest call to boycott classes and appeals to the university administration fulfil the demands of the study body and teachers.
The controversy surrounding the resignations of Pratap Bhanu Mehta and Arvind Subramanian, both renowned scholars and professors associated with Ashoka University, has raised issues concerning academic autonomy and independence of universities. The letter written by Professor Mehta made it clear that the trusties of the Ashoka University were not happy with his writings exposing the derision of constitutional values, anti-democratic tendencies of Modi government and collapse of institution ranging from executive, legislature and judiciary under the government.
It’s Time to Join the Dots:
Attack after attack on teachers, students and universities, both public and private, clearly exposes RSS-BJP’s total disdain for intellectual enquiry and excellence. *The agenda behind this witch-hunt is clear and simple, as declared by BJP leader Ram Madhav in his Indian Express opinion piece on 24th May 2019, the very next day of Modi govt returning to power for the second term. He wrote how Modi government will make efforts to destroy “the remnants of that cartel” where he means students, teachers and intellectuals” from the country’s academic, cultural and intellectual landscape.”
If one looks at how Modi government from its inception in 2014 used the state apparatus, the venomous social media and Godi media to vilify and attack students, faculty and intellectuals, the pattern is clear. From HCU to Ramjas college in DU, JNU (5th Jan 2020) and numerous other colleges and universities, ABVP goons physically attacked students. BJP-RSS used media to slander and vilify students as ‘anti-nationals’. Learning and critical thinking in universities is being destroyed through appointments of BJP-RSS affiliated individuals with questionable or no academic credentials as faculty. On the other hand, through massive fund cuts, seat cuts and scuttling of reservations, Modi government is ensuring unhindered corporate takeover of higher education. A yet to be born Jio university could get status of “Eminence” but even private universities which inculcate critical thinking, democratic principles and constitutional values will be targeted and silenced, just like Ashoka.
BJP-RSS wants to portray it as a fight between right vs left. However, it has become clear now that this is a ideological drive by BJP-RSS to purge all intellectuals, students, teachers and civil society who contribute to critical thinking and democratic values. Imagine, people like Arvind Subramanian, whom the present regime appointed as PM’s chief economic advisor (CEA), felt so much isolated, and stifled that he resigned from his post and left. And today Prof. Subramanian stands in solidarity with Prof Mehta against the latter’s hounding. This clearly shows, it’s just not about public funded versus private universities, nor about the left and right. Rather, present conjuncture is about a fascists power’s all-out offensive to s***f out all that is rational and critical, plural and democratic, humane and egalitarian. Academic autonomy is a misnomer under the present regime.
At a time when the farmers are protesting against corporate takeover of agriculture, common man suffering from rising fuel and cooking gas prices, and escalating unemployment and joblessness, the government is solely focussed on spreading hate and selling out of public sector units and destroying every democratic setup to privatise India. At such a juncture, Universities with students and faculty engaging in critical thinking pose a threat to the regime’s anti-democratic designs.
AISA stands in solidarity with students and faculty of Ashoka university who are fighting against destruction of academic autonomy and are standing tall to preserve and take forward the values of democracy and constitution.
