5 POINT DEMAND:

1. Gairsain as full fledged capital
2. Scheduled language status for Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari
3. More restrictions on plains people/outsiders buying lands in Uttarakhand
4. Push for Garhwali and Kumaoni at the school level as well as Govt departments
5. Change the name of the state to Garhwal & Kumaon to reflect local historical and ethno-linguistic reality

To my dear Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari brothers and sisters, why have our native languages never been accorded due recognition by the Government of India? Why are our hometowns like Tehri, Rudraprayag, Almora, Pithoragarh and Pauri neglected just for all resources to be poured into Dehradun?

There are dozens of pahari leaders in places of influence who can push for this status quo to be changed, like Yogi Adityanath, Trivendra Singh Rawat, Rita Bahuguna, Ramesh Pokhriyal, Gen Bipin Rawat, NSA Ajit Doval and others, but why don't they do anything?

It is time to make them realise that we won't sit ideally while our entire heritage and history is wiped out. If GoI has the slightest bit of interest in securing pahari support, it must immediately recognise Garhwali, Kumaoni and Jaunsari as scheduled languages.

If not, then it is obvious that they have failed us and they treat our culture and languages as an inconvenient joke. We are the sons of the hills, and our wrath will be upon you and your bedfellows if you don't accede to these very reasonable demands for recognition and official support.

Dear Pahari brothers and sisters. It's been about 2 decades since our struggle for a separate state became successful, but many problems continue to persist. First of all, the naming of the state itself is problematic: Uttarakhand literally means 'the Northern part' continuously reminding us that our whole identity is based on being a breakaway portion of UP. Does it not make much more sense to have our actual identity, of being Garhwalis and Kumaonis reflected in the state's name? Garhwal & Kumaon (G&K) as the state name is much more apt as it proudly displays our thousand year cultural existence. We also need to ensure that Garhwali and Kumaoni languages are properly supported and given precedence over Hindi and English within the state itself. What is your opinion on this?

This is how Dilwar Singh Negi, a migrant worker in North-East Delhi, was killed by a violent mob. What was his fault, belonging to a different religion? Having facial features making him easily identifiable as an outsider? Wanting to make an honest living to send some money back to his family? The blame is with the fearmongering media which spread lies about CAA, as well as the home ministry which did not act in a timely manner to prevent the riots!

सभिन सुणयूँ होलु उत्तराखंड सरकार को नयु पर्यास का बारा मा। उत्तराखंड सरकार संस्कृत भाषा थैं बढ़ावा दीणा का ख़ातिर वैथैं कक्षा 3 बटिन कक्षा 8 तक अनिवार्य कन्नी च। या पर्यास सहरानीय च अर उन सभ्यूं थैं अच्छू भी लगनु च जो अफिर संस्कृति का प्रेमी छन। पर यो पर्यास मा अपिर दूधबोली, गढ़वळि अर कुमाऊँनी कख छीं? यदि जन पर्यास हिंदी व संस्कृत थैं बढ़ावा दीणा का खातिर करैय जांद छीन वैका 50 प्रतिशत भी अफिर दूधबोली पर लगए जौ त यूँ भाषा को भी उद्धार हुए जालु। हमर ता इन् विचार च की गढ़वळि अर कुमाऊँनी पर भी पैसा खर्च कै जोऊ। या भाषा त उन्न भी खत्म हूँणी का कगार पर छीन।

So many of you must've recently read reports about extra effort that the Uttarakhand government is putting in to popularise Sanskrit in the state. The language is being made mandatory for ALL schoolchildren from classes 3-8, whether in private schools or government schools.

Of course, this is a step that heartens those of us concerned about preserving our history and our heritage. But what about the conservation of Garhwali and Kumaoni? Is even 50 per cent of the same effort and resources being poured into encouraging the study and adoption of these languages which are native to Uttarakhand? In our opinion, Garhwali/Kumaoni should be promoted with a hefty budget within the state of Uttarakhand, with a view to re-invigorate and preserve these hill languages which are on the verge of extinction already.
