What is a Whip?
In this brand new series of political Jargons, we delve into why politicians are afraid of the whip, and why this position is feared by many.
A whip is an official person of a political party who oversees the behavior of party members to ensure party discipline in a legislature.
The term "whip" comes from a fox-hunting expression—"whipper-in"—referring to the member of the hunting team responsible for keeping the dogs from straying from the team during a chase.

Rajiv Gandhi was 3 years old, when India became independent, and later he became the sixth Prime Minister of India.
Rajiv Gandhi, India's youngest Prime Minister, was a leader who indeed followed the legacy. Known to have made remarkable changes and contribution to our state, he is to be remembered and looked upto for tremendous contribution on his 78th birth anniversary.
He held office during 1984-1989, and was assassinated by a LTTE su***de bomber in 1991. It was during the peak of Sinhalese versus LTTE aggression.
He made a remarkable journey by supporting science, industrialisation, and reduced import quotas/tax and tariff charges on technology based like defence, airlines, computers, etc, therefore exposing the country to technological advancements.
He brought a revolution by many other important decisions. He lowered the voting age from 21 to 18. (61st amendment, 1989) This move was only to empower the youth.
He initiated to take democracy to the grassroot level by setting up the Panchayati Raj.
Although 73rd and 74th amendments to the constitution were added in 1992, a year after he was assassinated. The credit still goes to him for creating a background for the same.
In 1986, he brought NPE (National Policy on Education). The objective was to modernise education and come up with a better plan of executing education in the country.
Jawahar Navodayas, which were residential schools set across the country for meritorious students from the rural countries.
Rajiv Gandhi's assassination had made the whole country sad. His loss was heavily felt to Congress as well as the country.

Matangini Hazra
She is remembered as Gandhi Buri (a Bengali term for an old woman). Although, her name isn’t the one we often recognize as a freedom fighter. However, she was a revolutionary woman and freedom fighter, who fought until she was shot by the British police in front of Tamluk stations on 29th September 1942. She had an important role to play in the story of independence
She came from a poor family and was married at a young age, like the other women of her village. Compassionate and sensitive by nature, she always stepped ahead to help people. She was inspired by Gandhi ji, and therefore, also joined the civil-disobedience movement which made her infamous and highlighted her role back then.
She went on to protest against the British near the Tamluk Police station, with more than six thousand people consisting mostly of women. The police tried stopping her (Section 144 IPC) however, she kept moving forward with the flag held high. She was shot for not having followed the instruction, once in her arm, and the last one in the forehead, taking away her life.

We at Rajyatantra Advisory have decided to create a unique series as a tribute to the Unsung Heroes of Indian Freedom Struggle on the occasion of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav. The first post is a tribute to Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
Call him the Tribal Hero, a man of mysticism and principles, call him Birsa Munda. The man who fought fearlessly for his land and against the suppression of his cultural value. The British wanted to keep him captive and sought to burst his mystic claims. In 1897, when he was released, he began a campaign of revivalism. The slogan was called ''sirmare firun Raja jai''. He started a new revolt 'Ulgulan', and he was arrested again. It was during his time in jail, when he fell severely ill, and he died at the very young age of twenty-five.
Birsa Munda belonged to the Munda tribe that still dominates the Chota Nagpur region in Jharkhand.
They followed Sarnaism, rooted in animistic faith.
They had inhabited fertile lands, which they would use for cultivation and for the purpose of livelihood.
Britishers on the other hand were tempted to take charge and force them into bonded labour, which definitely wasn't a fair way to go about the same.
Birsa Munda wanted to protect his home, his tribe, and his community from the brutal and aggressive usurpation of the British.
People looked up to him, and didn't shy away from taking part in the movement with him, where he, a twenty-three year old young man named Birsa, had the courage to fight back.
He was heavily influenced by the Vaishnav monk, and eventually he started getting the recognition of a man with supernatural powers and mysticism.
Well his death had caused a major upheaval back then, more than 300 mundas got arrested and it became a news. After a long process of striving, the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act was passed in 1908, which stands significant even today.
