Earlier this year, the Modi government bulldozed the Trans Act 2026 through the parliament, ignoring voices of the trans community and opposition parities. The Act only recognises intersex persons and trans women from the Kinner-Hijra communities as transgender and excludes trans men, trans non binary persons and trans women who are not part of socio cultural groups such as Kinner and Hijra. The Act also makes medical test mandatory and destroys the Supreme Court guaranteed right to self identify gender. After Chief Justice Surya Kant Sharma clarified that he was only referring to those with fake degrees who enter the law profession, and claimed that his statement is being misquoted by the media, a video recording has been posted on Twitter that shows the CJI, calling all unemployed youths who enter the activism or media space as cockroaches. He holds the highest office of justice in our country, and has such views about unemployed youths, and activists. What a tragedy!
