Slogans Cannot Replace Science: Climate Report Raises Serious Questions for the Modi Government
Statement by Ameena Ismath
National Organising Committee Member, Young Democrats
The latest climate science report warning that India is steadily losing its capacity to design, build, and maintain its own scientific instruments raises serious questions about the Modi Government's much-publicized claims of self-reliance.
At a time when India is facing worsening heatwaves, erratic monsoons, and other climate-related challenges, scientists have pointed to growing dependence on imported equipment and the weakening of domestic research capabilities. This is not merely a scientific concern—it is a policy failure with far-reaching consequences.
While the government continues to market the slogan of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the reality is that India's scientific institutions are struggling with inadequate support, bureaucratic hurdles, and declining indigenous capacity. A nation aspiring to global leadership cannot afford to neglect its scientific foundations.
The erosion of domestic scientific capabilities undermines India's ability to effectively respond to the climate crisis and weakens the country's long-term technological and strategic independence. Scientific progress requires sustained investment, institutional autonomy, and a policy environment that values evidence over publicity.
Young Democrats call upon the Union Government to substantially increase investment in scientific research, strengthen indigenous technological development, support public research institutions, and ensure that climate policy is guided by credible, high-quality scientific data.
India's future cannot be built on slogans alone. It requires a genuine commitment to science, innovation, and public investment.

72% Undertrials: A Crisis in India's Justice System : Adv Hassan Faizy
The latest Prison Statistics India report once again exposes the deep crisis within India’s prison system. It is alarming that prisons across the country continue to operate beyond their sanctioned capacity, while a vast majority of inmates remain undertrial prisoners who have not been convicted by any court of law. The report shows that India’s prison occupancy rate stood at 112.7% in 2024, with undertrials constituting around 72.6% of the total prison population.
This situation is not merely an administrative failure; it is a serious challenge to human dignity, constitutional rights, and the principle of justice. Overcrowded prisons, prolonged detention of undertrials, inadequate infrastructure, and severe staff shortages reflect the urgent need for comprehensive judicial and prison reforms.
Young Democrats believe that justice is delayed and denied. Thousands of people, many from economically and socially vulnerable backgrounds, continue to languish in prisons while awaiting trial. The Union Government and State Governments must work together to strengthen legal aid mechanisms, reduce judicial delays, fill vacant prison staff positions, and improve prison infrastructure and rehabilitation facilities.
A democratic society must be judged not only by how it treats the powerful but also by how it treats those in its custody. India cannot claim to uphold justice while its prisons remain overcrowded and thousands continue to await timely access to the legal process.

I strongly condemn the attack on TMC National General secretary Abhishek Banerjee at Sonarpur while he was visiting the houses of victims belonging to his party.
I express our solidarity with Abhishek Banerjee and wish him the strength to continue his political work. We hope he remains steadfast in opposing the BJP and Sangh Parivar's divisive and authoritarian politics in West Bengal.

“First NEET controversies, now CBSE evaluation issues — India’s examination system is losing the trust of students.”
Lakhs of students prepare with dedication and sacrifice, but repeated irregularities, technical glitches, and allegations of mismanagement are pushing them into uncertainty and stress.
Accountability cannot be avoided when the future of millions is affected. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan must take responsibility for these repeated failures and resign from the post.
Students deserve a transparent, fair, and trustworthy examination system.

The Central Government’s Negligence Is Destroying Students’ Trust in the Education System
The reports emerging regarding the serious negligence and difficulties faced by students in the CBSE Class 12 re-evaluation and verification process are deeply alarming. Education should never become a source of fear, confusion, financial exploitation, or mental trauma for students and families already under enormous academic pressure.
Young Democrats strongly believes that every student deserves a transparent, accessible, accountable, and student-friendly evaluation system. Unfortunately, repeated complaints regarding errors in valuation, lack of transparency in mark verification, delayed responses, and excessive re-evaluation fees expose the growing failure of authorities to protect the interests of students.
The continuing negligence in the CBSE valuation system reflects the policy failure and administrative apathy of the Central Government in ensuring a fair and reliable examination process. An education system that cannot guarantee accuracy, transparency, and accountability loses the trust of the youth it claims to empower.
Students raising genuine concerns about marks, answer sheet verification, or re-evaluation procedures must be treated with empathy and responsibility — not with bureaucratic hurdles, unclear mechanisms, and financial burdens. No student should be forced to suffer emotionally or financially simply for seeking justice in evaluation.
The mental stress faced by students after board examinations is real and serious. Any system that increases uncertainty and anxiety among young people requires immediate correction. We urge the concerned authorities and the Central Government to simplify the re-evaluation process, ensure time-bound grievance redressal, reduce unnecessary fees, and conduct a comprehensive review of the current valuation system.
A nation that speaks about empowering youth must first respect the dignity, aspirations, and emotional well-being of its students. Educational reforms must prioritize fairness, trust, and transparency over administrative inefficiency and bureaucratic indifference.
Young Democrats stands firmly with students and parents demanding justice, transparency, accountability, and a humane academic system.
