Thank You, Thrissur & Kasaragod

Taking charge as District Collector, Thrissur, on 19 July 2024, with lot of hopes and expectations, and leaving unexpectedly on 2 March 2026, was one of the most difficult and emotional moments of the journey. Yet, looking back today, what remains stronger is a deep sense of happiness, satisfaction and gratitude.

During those 18 months, Thrissur became much more than a place of work. I had the privilege of reaching different parts of the district and connecting with people from all walks of life — from children to elderly people, from cities to remote villages. Listening to people, understanding their concerns and working with them to find solutions became one of the most meaningful parts of the journey. The people, festivals, everyday encounters and countless conversations made Thrissur feel like home.

On 3 March, I took charge as District Collector, Kasaragod, during the Assembly election period. Though the tenure was short, the warmth of the people helped build a strong connection with the district. I tried to stay close to the people, understand their concerns directly and focus on basic infrastructure and development needs. Several initiatives were taken forward from tribal development, revenue and land matters, education and health to tourism, Disaster Management, employment, youth and sports.

The journey also brought several recognitions, including the 2026 State Best District Collector Award, Best District Collector Award from the Women & Child Development Department, Best District Election Officer Award from the Election Commission of India, State Election Commission appreciation, 2025 Best Collectorate Award, and appreciation from the Hon’ble High Court for the district administration’s intervention in the Paliyekkara toll issue.

But beyond every award, the greatest recognition has been the love, trust and affection of the people — the familiar faces, unexpected greetings, conversations and relationships that remain even after leaving.

Thank you, Thrissur and Kasaragod, for the memories, relationships and warmth.

85 weeks. Two districts. Around 2,300 people. Thousands of conversations.

‘Meet the Collector’ and ‘Namasthe Collector’ — a memorable journey.

A few days after taking charge as District Collector, Thrissur, in July 2024, a simple thought came to mind — why not create an opportunity for students to walk into the Collector’s chamber, sit across the table and talk without any formalities?

That thought led to ‘Meet the Collector – Face to Face’, held every Wednesday before the day’s official engagements. The programme later continued in Kasaragod as ‘Namasthe Collector’.

The first interaction was with students of GHSS Pampady in August 2024. From there, 64 interactions were held in Thrissur and 21 in Kasaragod. Around 1,750 people in Thrissur and 550 in Kasaragod — nearly 2,300 people in all — became part of these conversations.

Each interaction was kept to around 25–30 participants so that everyone had the opportunity to speak directly. Students, teachers, college students, Anganwadi workers, Haritha Karma Sena members, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and people from different walks of life took part.

Discussions ranged from education, sports and travel to school facilities, aspirations and concerns. Many of these conversations led to initiatives such as sports kits for schools, ‘Va Vayikkam’ reading spaces in Anganwadis, the Muniyattukunnu tourism project, interventions in school infrastructure and efforts to address students’ travel-related concerns. In Kasaragod, the suggestions also helped shape development priorities, including greater focus on school infrastructure under the Kasaragod Development Package.

The initial nervousness often gave way to open conversations, laughter and photographs. Amid the rush of files, meetings and official responsibilities, these Wednesday mornings offered a welcome opportunity to simply listen, interact and connect with people.

Except on days affected by examinations, vacations, elections and other unavoidable official programmes, efforts were made to hold the interaction every week. In both districts, the District Collector’s interns (DCIP) coordinated the programme.

The idea that began in Thrissur later travelled to other districts, departments and even beyond Kerala.

On 15 September 2026, the interaction with students of GHSS Ravaneshwaram became the final school interaction — on the last day as District Collector, Kasaragod. A journey that began at GHSS Pampady in Thrissur had come full circle at Ravaneshwaram in Kasaragod.

This was an idea that had taken shape during the civil service preparation years — to make administration more accessible and reduce the distance between people and government. Being able to turn that idea into reality has been deeply fulfilling.

What began with a simple question — ‘Why not sit together and talk?’ — became one of the most memorable parts of this journey in public service.

A wish shared during last week’s visit to the Government Old Age Home at Paravanadukkam was fulfilled on the last day as District Collector, Kasaragod. A houseboat ride at Kottappuram, Neeleshwaram, with the residents made it a truly special day — a beautiful memory to carry forward from Kasaragod.

Today, I have been relieved of the post of District Collector, Kasaragod. The memories and affection received here will always remain special.

With warm regards,
Arjun Pandian
