A very beautiful documentary has been made and dedicated to Sarus cranes of Dhanauri Wetlands, Uttar Pradesh
Sarus cranes are sentient beings — they pair for life, feel emotions like humans do, and express love with great tenderness. In north India, a promising relationship between local farmers and the birds is securing their survival, and renewing hope of peaceful coexistence.

The Charging Couples
The Purple Swamphens have a reputation for being aggressive towards other waterfowl and often fight amongst themselves and with other species over food , signalled by their harsh screaming call. ... Considering the size of the Swamphen, they are quite proficient fliers. Their dangling legs and elongated toes may make them appear awkward.
these aggressive invaders could have negative impacts on native birds and to be highly territorial fights.

I had the fortune of witnessing a complete episode of the heron catching and consuming a fish. From nowhere, it glided to a graceful landing near the water edge. It must have spotted something as it adopted a hunting stance and walked nearer to the flowing water . After a while, it plunged into the water, with its wings spread out for balance. In a flash it struck its bill into the water and caught a fish (the exciting part was unfortunately not recorded in the video and a still picture of it in the water with the struggling fish in the bill was used as a fill-in instead) (above). It then returned to the dry land, almost dropping the catch but immediately retrieved it. Without trying to stun the fish, it just manipulated and aligned the wriggling fish before tilting the head slightly to swallow it.

A Pair of Sarus Cranes
at Dhanauri wetlands
It is widely believed that the sarus pairs for life and that death of one partner leads to the other pining to death. They are a symbol of marital virtue and in parts of Gujarat/India, it is a custom to take a newly wed couple to see a pair of sarus cranes.
