Threads of Tradition: Learning the art of spinning yarn on Charkha | 16-17 May

In a world of fast fashion and instant results, we often lose touch with the origin of what we wear. The art of spinning is not just about making yarn; it is about patience, presence, and a deeper connection with the earth.

Join us for a two-day immersive workshop to rediscover the intimate process of transforming raw cotton into yarn.

Guided by K J Satchidananda (Sacchu), we will explore the meditative rhythm of the charkha and the stories woven into every fiber.

Time:10:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Venue: Crafts Council of Telangana (CCT), Road no 12, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad

The Crafts Council of Telangana, under its Naipunya Sikshana initiative, conducted a pottery workshop at Borabanda Government High School, Hyderabad, with resource person Mr. Manpreeth Singh Nishter of MSN Pottery Studio.

The workshop introduced students to foundational clay practices through nature-inspired exercises as well as diya making. From exploring surface textures using leaf impressions to shaping forms through hand-building techniques, the sessions emphasised material understanding and individual expression.

From 3rd–10th March, the Crafts Council of Telangana convened a focused workshop in Hyderabad with artisans from Nimmalakunta, led by Mr. Sriramulu, centred on the practice of Tholu Bommalata (Leather Puppets).

The engagement examined both process and application, revisiting the use of natural dyes while opening out the craft to new formats and contexts. While grounded in a long-standing storytelling tradition, the exercise considered how material, form, and function could evolve without losing their core identity.

Through this sustained exchange, the initiative contributed to reinforcing the continuity of leather puppetry, while situating it within a contemporary framework of relevance and use, continuing with earlier design intervention products for an upcoming exhibition of CCT in July 2026.

The Crafts Council of Telangana marks a significant step through a focused workshop on Banjara Needle Craft, engaging women artisans from the Yellamma Thanda cluster, near Ibrahimpatnam in Telangana with an emphasis on design development and market alignment.

Building on earlier interventions by Mr. Aratrik Dev Varman and Ms. Jisha Unnikrishnan, this workshop driven by Ms. Sh*tal Naik followed a structured approach on skill enhancement, strengthening technical precision while deepening the application of traditional embroidery practices.

The initiative aims to support the preservation, adaptation, and long-term enhancement of Banjara Needle Craft within evolving contemporary aesthetics.
