I trek to the extremely isolated villages and live there with the locals. The taboos around menstruation are very extreme in the areas where I work. These areas follow some extremely archaic traditions, many of which are undocumented anywhere else. During their period, women drink cow urine and sprinkle it in their homes to ‘purify’ themselves, sleep in the cowshed with the livestock, sit apart, do not touch people, do not touch water directly, do not attend religious events, and have many more such restrictions. This is mostly because they are afraid of the ‘gods’. Menstruating women who have broken these rules are often blamed for lack of rains or for leopard attacks. Animal sacrifice is rampant and is performed to appease the gods.
For the past nine months, Brinda Nagarajan has been trekking to some of Uttarakhand’s remotest villages and conducting workshops to increase awareness about menstruation among locals. The lack of information about a biological process like menstruation is disturbing, and she has found incidents like those mentioned above to be alarmingly common.

Hence, when Brinda made the not-so-lucrative decision of quitting her well-paying job in the prime of her career to take up a rural development fellowship which would cost her an 80 percent salary cut, her family was more than supportive. ग़रीबी नहीं रोक पायी उनकी सोच की परवाज़

तेलंगाना के बुनकर मल्लेशम ने पोचमपल्ली साड़ियों पर डिज़ाइनिंग के लिए अपनी मां को चार फुट लंबे आसु फ्रेम पर एक दिन में हजारों बार धागे घुमाते हुए देखा था। छठी कक्षा में ही पढ़ाई छोड़ चुके मल्लेशम के पास किताबी ज्ञान की जरूर कमी थी लेकिन धागे घुमाने के कारण अपनी मां के कंधों और हाथों में रहने वाले दर्द के प्रति उसकी ‘संवेदना’ कम नहीं थी।दूसरों की परेशानी को महसूस कर सकने वाली उसकी इस ‘संवेदना’ ने उसमें एक खास ‘सृजनशीलता’ को जन्म दे दिया। तभी अपनी मां के इस दर्द को कम करने और इस उद्योग में लगे दूसरे लोगों के लिए इस काम को आसान बनाने के लिए उसने इस पूरी प्रक्रिया को ऑटोमेटिक बनाने का निश्चय कर लिया। पढ़ाई-लिखाई के लिहाज से लगभग शून्य इस व्यक्ति ने ड्रमों पर एक तय स्थान पर तार बांधने वाली मशीन की प्रणाली को समझकर एक ऐसी आसु मशीन बना दी, जो किसी महिला बुनकर द्वारा पांच घंटे में अंजाम दिए जाने वाले काम को डेढ़ घंटे में कर देती थी।

इतना ही नहीं वर्ष 2002 में जब स्टील के दाम बढ़ने पर उसकी मशीन की कीमत भी बढ़ गई तो स्थानीय बुनकरों की विवशता को भांपकर उसने इलेक्ट्रॉनिक्स, माइक्रो कंट्रोल सिस्टम और प्रोग्रामिंग की तेलुगू में छपी किताबों पढ़कर अपनी इलेक्ट्रॉनिक मशीन को पूरी तरह मैकेनिकल बना दिया। इससे मशीन की कीमत वापस कम हो गई।

If you wake up to the fresh air that permeates Hyderabad’s HITEC City and take a walk in the wee morning hours, you can see several individuals cycling with professional gear. One of them is Sridhar Pinnapureddy, Founder and Chairman of Rs 250-crore Tier-4 data centre company CtrlS Data Centre Limited. A lanky 42-year-old, Sridhar is a very shy person who does not reveal much about his past. That said, everyone around him knows about his over 20 years of business experience and the numerous awards he has won over the last seven years. However, his journey has been anything but easy, what with having been on the verge of bankruptcy and having had his team question his instincts.
He has founded three companies, the third among which is two-year-old startup Cloud4C, a disaster recovery service that is now on the verge of raising money. He has raised Rs 400 crore from a clutch of global private equity players and is on his way to making the company a $500 million business by the end of the decade.
What advice do you have for entrepreneurs?
Sridhar: Let me say that the family system supports entrepreneurs in India. An entrepreneur needs the family’s support in times of distress. Many years ago my dad mortgaged his house to make me a businessman. I come from a family of agriculturalists and my father had a drilling business. What I am hinting at is that family is the single most important reason why India has a great support ecosystem. But there is another side of India where banks work on a collateral model with students for education loans. This model kills innovation and the ability to think. There is an ecosystem in place that makes universities a place of research that can take ideas to commercial viability. There is no vigour in the system other than family supporting you at all times. The bridge between university and corporate innovation is still small when compared to the millions of students whose potential we can tap. The good part is that the nation is young and it can serve the world to become technology and business leaders. There are extremes in India which needs to be addressed by all of us. Entrepreneurs do their part of building services and technology. There is one problem, though. I do look at the current crop of those who raise investments and care less for building sustainable organisations and I wonder whether these companies will last. Such businesses will surely not survive over the next five years. That said, the fiday five years has seen a sea change in making entrepreneurship a viable option.
