Centre Formally Defers Census Exercise in Manipur
New Delhi, September 5: The Central Government has formally deferred the houselisting operations for Census 2027 in Manipur, providing additional time for the state to prepare for the exercise.
In a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, on September 5, the government amended its earlier notification of January 7, 2026, relating to the conduct of Census 2027.
The notification, issued as S.O. 4917(E), states that the houselisting operations for Census 2027 in Manipur are being deferred “till further declaration.” The amendment specifically excludes Manipur from the provisions applicable to the other States and Union Territories until a further announcement is made.
