India scaling up energy efficient LED lights
NEW DELHI: Today nearly 30 million energy efficient LED light bulbs were distributed to Indian households and 461,954 light fixtures upgraded to LEDs under a government program to advance energy efficient lighting in India.
After calling for energy efficient LED light bulbs to be installed in 100 cities in India by March 2016, the Indian government is working to further progress the adoption of energy efficient lighting though two government programs under the Energy Efficiency Service Limited (EESL) funding mechanism: the Street Light National Programme (SLNP) to facilitate financing of outdoor street lighting projects, and the Domestic Efficient Lighting Programme (DELP) to drive down costs of LED bulbs for indoor applications.
The government has also launched an interactive map-based online ‘Dashboard’ to showcase energy, monetary and environmental savings achieved with LED lighting in India, both for indoor and outdoor applications.
The website is refreshed regularly to reveal the latest figures of LED lighting adoption for both the domestic DELP and streetlight SLNP schemes. The interactive maps also allow users to localize LED street lighting projects, locate local retailers and track energy generating demand that has been avoided from the energy efficient lighting. This is particularly important in India as shortfalls between energy supply and demand at peak times can result in major power cuts, especially in rural areas.
Krishnan Pallassana, India Director of The Climate Group, comments: “This website provides a very visually informative platform to help showcase the great benefits of LED lighting and to promote the very latest progress India is making in promoting energy efficient lighting.”
It was reported that retrofitting the 35 million street lights in India to LEDs could result in potential annual savings of 9 billion kilowatt/hours (kWh), a CO2 emission reduction of 6 million tons per year, and 1500 megawatts (MW) of avoided load capacity.
As far as domestic lighting is concerned, India still largely relies on incandescent bulbs, which waste over 90% of electricity as heat. Replacing the estimated 770 million incandescent bulbs used in the residential sector with LEDs could reduce electricity consumption by as much as 100 billion kWh every year, with a corresponding annual greenhouse gases emission reduction of 79 million tons of CO2. The switch could also help cut peak electricity demand by 20,000 MW as well as bring the more tangible benefit of significantly reducing householder energy bills.
The Climate Group has long advocated the benefits of LED street lighting around the world. Back in 2012 we conducted the LightSaver trials – developing and monitoring LED pilot projects in 10 major cities around the world including Kolkata, Thane and Mumbai in India. The LightSavers report revealed for the first time that the saving potential for LED street lighting could reach up to 50-70%.

New research may enhance display, LED lighting technology
Large-area integration of quantum dots, photonic crystals produce brighter and more efficient light A new method to extract more efficient and polarized light from quantum dots (QDs) over a large-scale area has been developed by researchers. Their method, which combines QD and photonic crystal technology, could lead to brighter and more efficient mobile phone, tablet, and computer displays, as well as enhanced LED lighting.

What is an LED?
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device (LED chip) that emits visible light when an electric current passes through it - essentially it converts eletricity into light. When one or more LED's are combined with an electrical driver and placed in a housing unit, you have a complete LED system.
What are the benefits of LED Lighting?
Long-lasting - LED bulbs last up to 10 times longer than compact fluorescents, and far longer than typical incandescents.
Durability - since LEDs do not have a filament, they are not damaged under circumstances when a regular incandescent bulb would be broken. Because they are solid, LED bulbs hold up well to jarring, bumping, shock and vibration. Additionally, they have excellent cold weather performance.
Cool- LED light bulbs do not cause heat build-up; LEDs produce 3.4 btu's/hour, compared to 85 for incandescent bulbs. Because common incandescent light bulbs get hot, they contribute to heat build-up in a room. LED light bulbs prevent this heat build-up, thereby helping to reduce air conditioning costs in the home.
Mercury-free - no mercury is used in the manufacturing of LED light bulbs.
Efficient- LED light bulbs use only 2-17 watts of electricity (1/3rd to 1/30th of Incandescent or CFL). LED light bulbs used in fixtures inside the home save electricity, remain cool and save money on replacement costs since LED light bulbs last so long. Small LED flashlight bulbs will extend battery life 10 to 15 times longer than with incandescent bulbs.
Cost-effective - although LED light bulbs are initially expensive, the cost is recovered over time and in battery savings.
Choose LED lighting and save -- money, energy, and the environment.
