Akshaya Mukul is a citizen historian and journalist, the author of Gita Press and the Making of Hindu India and Writer, Rebel, Soldier, Lover: The Many Lives of Agyeya. He was a journalist for over two decades, working at the TOI, HT, Pioneer and Asian Age.

This interactive session discusses how peoples’ historical imagination or consciousness is constituted. It will do so by taking the audience through the history of ‘Kalyan’, a monthly magazine of Gita Press, now a century old. Kalyan was an everyday form of literature with deep social impact in the Hindi-speaking world and went a long way in enabling a kind of historical imagination that has now become common sense.

A historian relies on her sources; a court of law relies on the evidence presented to it.
However, when sifting through evidence, it is also important to think about the story, or the case, one is trying to prove. Are we leading evidence to establish guilt? To prove innocence? To what end?
Second, how is evidence collected?
And finally, is evidence even important, if we think we know that somebody is guilty? There could be instant punishment without going into procedure and proof.
This talk examines the processes of the court of law and how it parallels the craft of the historian.

Speaker Description: Shahrukh Alam is a constitutional lawyer, human rights activist and an advocate at the Indian Supreme Court.

The Historically Tempered Collective, INTACH Bengaluru and History for Peace cordially invite you to a workshop and panel discussion on the 27th of January, 2026 at Sabha Bangalore, to present and discuss the Historically Tempered Collective’s video series Indian History: Thali by Thali.

The panel discussion with members of the Historically Tempered Collective –– Janaki Nair (historian; former professor, JNU), Meera Iyer (author; Convenor, INTACH Bengaluru chapter), Saisudha Acharya (children’s & YA nonfiction author, educator), and Ajay Cadambi (educator) –– begins at 6 p.m.

The workshop taking place between 3 and 4:30 p.m. will be facilitated by Gowri Mirlay Achanta (teacher at St Joseph's Boys High School and winner of several district, state and national awards for teaching; curator of the museum on the history of St Joseph's) and Madhusree DuttaMajumdar (Lead Educator and Head of the Department of History and Political Science at Vidyashilp Academy, Bangalore; trained oral historian).

History for Peace, an initiative of the Seagull Foundation for the Arts, is looking for two Research Assistants – one based in Kolkata and one based in Delhi – to assist in archival research for its teaching modules on Contemporary India.

Minimum Qualifications: M.A. History (preferably with specialization in Modern/Contemporary India)

Desired Experience: It is preferred if the candidate demonstrates familiarity with the archives of the National Library, Kolkata or the Prime Ministers Museum and Library in Delhi and online databases.

Duration: One Month (might extend to two)

Location: Kolkata/Delhi

Remuneration: Rs. 25,000/-

The research assignment will commence from 01 January 2026.
