During the colonial era, cheap mill processed textiles from Manchester ruined the handloom industry in India. These mill processed textiles came in large 'thaans' and these thaans had very interesting labels.
Today these labels are very collectible- not only because of their interesting subject matter but also because these seemingly benign labels represent one of the most tumultuous periods of colonial India, ultimately culminating in the Swaraj movement.
These labels are also collectible for people interested in the history of Calcutta.
