¶Deaf Education in India
According to the 2011 Census there are nearly 6 million Deaf in India. Uttar Pradesh alone has the highest number of Deaf people which is 1.3 million. With Disabilities and the 2006 National Policy for People with Disabilities, the government has focused on inclusive policies on education. The inclusive policies have not really made the education wholly inclusive, especially for deaf students because of their communication needs. The number of schools for the Deaf in UP is very small compared to other states. Maybe less than 5% of Deaf children go to school and these are usually from urban areas. There is a huge need for Deaf children’s education in rural areas. For this purpose, it is essential that the school be a residential. One huge benefit of having a residential school is that children will get round-the-clock education. Deaf children miss out on many extra-classroom education as there is no one to communicate with them in homes. Being with training house parents, the Deaf children will learn faster and be able to compete with their hearing peers. WHY 'BHARTIYA BADHIR VIDYALAYA' AND WHY IS IT DIFFERENT FROM OTHER DEAF SCHOOLS? It is stated that there are more than 500 Deaf schools in India. All Deaf schools in India, which also includes the Agra Deaf School, follow the “Oralism” methodology, where the teachers use speech to explain the lessons to Deaf students. They write on the board and the students are made to copy and reproduce the same through rote memory in their exams.Concepts are not cleared and the student has no understanding of what he/she is writing or rather ‘copying’. And this methodology is being used for more than 100 years in India and as a result even after being in school for 10 to 12 years, the student still cannot read and write. He remains illiterate and unqualified for any professional job or any job per say.

. ¶¶BBV is the only Deaf school in India, as of now, which adopts the 'bilingual methodology', i.e. teaching reading and writing skills through Indian Sign Language, where pupils are taught English and Hindi in their written forms, so that full literacy in both can be obtained. Thus, by the time they leave school, either after 10th standard or after Plus-Two, they will be academically prepared to pursue appropriate further education opportunities elsewhere, should they chose.

¶¶ BBV’s ACCOMPLISHMENTS

In the first academic year we had students in LKG, UKG and class III. The age group of these students was from 7–15 years. When our students took admission their signing and reading writing skills was extremely low. All had come from different Deaf schools in Kanpur, Lucknow, Unnao and Bareilly, where they had studied for 2-5 years. Yet they could not read and only managed to copy and write without any understanding. We had to go back and start from the very basics as their foundation was not strong. As our students are Deaf we used a lot of visual aids, signing and discussions during teaching. Following are the steps we use for teaching our students bilingually. Bhartiya Badhir Vidyalaya (BBV) is a residential Deaf school run as a project under Deaf Empowerment and Academic Foundation (DEAF), which is registered and recognized by the Uttar Pradesh government. BBV is the first Deaf school in India, being led by the very first Deaf Principal of India. The first academic year started on 11th July 2016 with 5 Deaf students from Kanpur, Unnao, Pillibhit, Bareilly and Lucknow. Presently, in the second academic year we have grown from 5 to 10 students, including an 8 year old girl from a remote village in Madhya Pradesh. We are still being approached with many request for admission, but due to lack of space we are finding it difficult to take in more students. Bhartiya Badhir Vidyalaya is a school from KG to class XII. But in the current academic year admissions are open from KG to class V only. Within the next 2 years BBV will get itself registered with the CBSE board.
