St Charles Lwanga protected his fellow companions aged 13 to 30 from the perverted demands of Bagandan ruler, Mwanga, and instructed and encouraged them in the Catholic faith during their imprisonment for refusing the ruler's demands. Charles' courage and belief in God inspired the young men to remain chaste and faithful. For his unwillingness to submit to immoral acts and for safeguarding the faith of his friends, Charles was burned to death at Namugongo on June 3, 1886, by Mwanga's orders.

Joan of Arc was a young pious peasant in medieval France who would receive messages from the saints who guided her to lead France into victory in its long running war with England. With no military experience, she convinced the crown prince of France to allow her to lead the army and they achieved victory. After the prince was crowned king, Joan was captured by the English, and tried for witchcraft and was burned at stake at the age of 19. She was canonized in 1920 and is considered as a great martyr and patron saint of France.

Blessed Joseph Kowalski was born in 1911 in Poland, where he became a Salesian priest and served as Provincial Secretary and worked with difficult youth.
In 1939, Poland was occupied by Germans but the Salesians continued their educational work leading to the arrest of Fr Kowalski along with 11 other Salesians working in Krakow.
He was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp where he secretly devoted himself to the apostolate hearing confessions, celebrating Mass, reciting the Rosary and holding hidden lectures encouraging his prison companions to fight for survival.
The officials discovered him with a Rosary and told him to trample on it. On refusing to do so, he was murdered and his body was later burnt.
Pope John Paul II, from Poland himself, beatified him in 1999, along with 108 Polish martyrs from World War II.
