🎉 15 Years of Increasing Access and Quality Primary Health Care through Mobile Health Centers: Taking Healthcare to the Last Mile 🎉

Today we mark the 15th year of our Mobile Health Center (MHC) operations. On 7th January 2011, our first MHC began providing primary health care services in low-income areas of Mumbai.

We have come a long way since then!

✅ Today we operate 14 MHCs – 8 in Mumbai, 3 in Tamil Nadu, and 3 in Bengaluru – and will soon be adding 2 MHCs in Jaipur.

✅ Our focus: Improving access and quality of primary health care services for vulnerable populations.

✅ We’ve incorporated learnings from the communities we serve to enhance services.

✅ Special focus on Non-Communicable Diseases (Diabetes & Hypertension) and Mental Health & Psychosocial Support.

✅ Built a strong referral network for patients needing higher-level care.

Every day, our dedicated team provides services in two locations, and this year, our MHCs will provide consultations to over 300,000 patients!

A big THANK YOU to our passionate and committed MHC team – doctors, nurses, counsellors, health educators, and drivers. You make us proud!

We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners and donors whose unwavering support and trust have made this journey possible.

As we celebrate 15 years of MHC operation, we reaffirm our purpose of “Access to quality health that saves and improves lives.”

For years, Reena lived with an invisible illness - fear, compulsion, and exhaustion that took over her daily life. Misunderstood and dismissed, she didn’t know that what she was experiencing had a name: severe Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

Her turning point came at Americares India’s Sagittarius Mobile Health Centre, where our MHPSS (mental health and psychosocial support) counsellor noticed her distress, listened without judgement, and helped her access the care she needed.

What followed was care that stayed:
🧠 Early identification
🤝 Family engagement
🏥 Accompanied referral to psychiatric care
📞 Regular follow-ups and counselling

Today, Reena is healing - slowly, steadily, and with support. Her anxiety has reduced, daily routines are returning, and she no longer feels alone.

This is why Mental Health & Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) must be part of community healthcare - because healing begins when people are seen, believed, and supported.

On World Diabetes Day, Americares India brought diabetes awareness directly into Mumbai’s communities! 🩺💙

Our Mobile Health Centre (MHC) and NC-DISHAA teams went beyond clinic walls to educate, engage, and empower residents on diabetes prevention and management.

Highlights from the day:
✨ Reached 959 community members across 5 wards through innovative outreach
✨ People successfully managing their diabetes captured joyful selfies at our dedicated stand to celebrate their victories!
✨ For the first time under MHC, we conducted group sessions at 36 locations, educating 437 participants on practical diabetes management and healthy lifestyle changes.
✨ Interactive sessions inside the MHC van at Bahiram Tekdi engaged 54 participants.
✨ Under NC-DISHAA, expert health talks sessions in 3 wards reached 96 community members (including those with and without NCDs).
✨ Two engaging street plays under MHC brought diabetes messages to life for 92 people and under NC-DISHAA, 3 street play performances reached over 280 community members with relatable storytelling.

Meaningful health awareness doesn’t happen only in hospitals - it happens where people live and connect! 🚐

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Apni Shala Foundation this quarter to strengthen Mental Health and Well-being across 81 schools in Mumbai. 💛🏫

Through this collaboration, we will work closely with principals and teachers - supporting them through the year to create safe, nurturing, and emotionally responsive learning environments for their students. 🌱

As a next step, Apni Shala & Americares India will be facilitating a specialised SEL (social and emotional learning) training journey for our School Health Program facilitators, helping build a shared language and approach to wellbeing across our teams. 🤝✨

Together, we’re working towards a school ecosystem where every student and educator feels seen, supported, and empowered. 💬🌼

What changes when healthcare comes closer to home? 🏥💙

For 50-year old Anusuya Kale, it was a lifeline. Living in the narrow lanes of Tanaji Nagar, Sakinaka, with her husband and her son, she struggled with diabetes for years. Long travel, crowded clinics, and high costs often meant her check-ups were delayed or skipped. “I only went to the doctor when I felt really unwell,” she recalls.

That changed when the Mobile Health Centre van began visiting her neighbourhood. The white van, parked just a few lanes away, brought healthcare to her doorstep. It offered regular consultations, free medicines, and follow-up care. For the first time, Anusuya could talk to a doctor who knew her history, without worrying about the cost or the commute.

Today, Anusuya has a different outlook. She regularly visits the van for her diabetes check-ups and adheres to the diet and medication counselling she receives. Her meals are still simple — roti, sabzi, and tea — but she now knows how to manage portions and stay consistent with her treatment. “Now I get checked regularly, and I don’t have to worry about skipping my medicines,” she smiles.

For Anusuya and many others like her, healthcare no longer means waiting — it comes home.

When quality healthcare becomes accessible, it doesn’t just treat illness — it transforms daily life into a journey of wellbeing, dignity, and peace of mind. 💙

This Children’s Day, we celebrate every child who’s learning to lead with health. 🌈

Through the School Health Program — run in municipal schools in partnership with the Municipal Corporations of Mumbai and Bengaluru — we’re helping children build strong foundations for life by teaching them the importance of hygiene, nutrition, and self-care.

Because when children learn health, they don’t just grow stronger — they spark change that reaches every home and every community. 💫

🌟 Healthy Children Build a Healthy Future 🌟

What happens when classrooms turn into kitchens, stages, and art studios?

That’s exactly what we saw during Nutrition Week with our School Health Program (SHP)!

Last month, our SHP teams brought the spirit of Nutrition Week to 45 schools across Mumbai, transforming learning into a fun, community-wide celebration. 🌱
The initiative went beyond textbooks — it was a preventive health measure aimed at strengthening children’s ability to learn, grow, and lead healthy lives.

Through creative, hands-on activities, children discovered that good nutrition isn’t just about food — it’s the foundation for a brighter, stronger future.

👧👦 3,347 children explored the benefits of nutrition through recipe competitions, healthy tiffin displays, songs, fancy dress shows, art, and slogan chanting.
👩‍👩‍👦 Alongside them, 370 parents, 135 teachers, and 20 headmasters participated — reinforcing healthy food habits both at home and in school.

A special highlight was the Healthy Cooking Competition, where parents showcased nutritious recipes — and six fathers joined in, setting an inspiring example for their children.

💡 Every poster drawn, every song sung, and every recipe shared carried one message: Healthy eating leads to healthier futures.

At Americares India, we believe that every small step towards better nutrition creates a ripple effect of well-being — nurturing not just individual children, but families and communities at large. 💚

Disasters can take everything away in minutes. Relief must give back more than just essentials—it must restore hope.

When floods swept through Himachal Pradesh in early September, villages in Mandi district bore the brunt of the devastation. Homes were washed away, daily life came to a standstill, and families were left with only what they could carry.

In such times, swift and compassionate action saves lives. At Americares India, our Humanitarian Program moved into action within days, ensuring relief reached the hardest-hit communities with urgency and care.

Our response goes beyond basic aid:

✅ Upgraded Relief Kits – redesigned based on community feedback, now including torches with batteries, scissors, unisex underwear, and multi-use pouches.

✅ Real-time Community Feedback – a strengthened multi-lingual QR code system, scaled pan-India, putting people’s voices at the center of every response.

✅ Mental Health Integration – embedding Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) through orientations, regular check-ins, and debriefs to prioritise self-care and wellbeing of responders and partner organizations.

Between 9th and 21st September, we reached more than 11,400 people in Mandi district. This was made possible by the tireless commitment of our colleagues and the support of our partners.

Every crisis tests us. Every response strengthens us. At Americares India, we are committed to ensuring that communities don’t just recover, but rebuild with dignity, resilience, and hope.
