We may not get to choose every sound around us, construction happens, traffic exists, cities are naturally full of activity but within all of that are sounds that do come down to our choices.

The horn we press, the volume we set, the way we use our phones in shared spaces, the amount of sound we carry into someone else’s day.

We don’t need perfect silence to make a difference, we just need a little more awareness of the sounds that are ours to control. 🌿

Some of the most comforting sounds in a city are often the easiest to miss. Not because they’re gone, but because louder sounds have increasingly become part of the foreground. A healthier soundscape isn’t one without life, movement or celebration. It’s one where the sounds around us don’t constantly have to compete to be heard.

It’s easy to notice the noise everyone else is making. Ours? Not always. A horn pressed out of impatience, a video playing out loud, music travelling beyond our walls, small things individually, but multiplied across millions of people, they shape the sound of our cities.

We may not be able to control every sound around us, but we can be more mindful of the ones that begin with us.

Before asking the world to turn its volume down, it’s worth checking our own. 🌿

Not every loud sound is unnecessary and not every enjoyable sound needs to disappear. Context matters, purpose matters, volume matters and when our sound enters a space we share with others, consideration matters too. Perhaps the better question isn’t simply, “Is this sound or noise? It’s “Does it need to be this loud, for this long, here?” 🔊🌿

We’ve somehow turned honking into a reaction to traffic instead of a tool for when it’s actually needed. 🚗🔊
And when everyone does it, all we get is the same traffic… just much louder. The next time you’re on the road, pay attention to the horns around you, you might be surprised by how many aren’t helping anyone move faster, stay safer, or communicate anything useful.

Quieter roads don’t require silence, they just require a little less unnecessary noise. 🌿
