Stop telling your child to "just memorize it." Let’s tell them a story instead.

At 𝗬𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗱, we teach the logic of "Company."

1️⃣ 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐕𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐥
When a short vowel (like a, e, i, o, u) is all alone, it feels lonely and scared! 😨
It calls for extra protection. It needs the "𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦" (c and k holding hands) to keep it safe.
👉 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: T-r-u-ck (u is lonely ——→ needs ck).

2️⃣𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐕𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐥 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲
When a vowel has a friend (like a Vowel Team or a Consonant neighbor), it feels brave! It has company. 😊
Because they are together, they only need 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐊 to stand guard.
👉 𝐄𝐱𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞: B-oo-k (Two vowels together ——→ use k)
M-i-l-k (The 'i' has 'l' for company ——→ use k)

Today, as we all get back to our routines (and shake off the holiday mood!), let's look at fresh ways to keep the reading habit alive. At 𝗬𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗱 too, we don't just want children to read; we want them to feel 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 in the 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. That is why we look beyond the storybook.

👉 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝟱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗥𝗘𝗡'𝗧 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀.

Here is why we love these alternatives:

1️⃣ 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗮𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 & 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀: There is something so "grown-up" about opening a fresh paper, isn't there? 🦁 Plus, since many are subscription-based, children love the thrill of seeing their own name on the mail. It makes reading feel like a special delivery, not a chore. 📬
2️⃣𝗗𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: Think of them as a "confidence tool." 📖 When a child learns to find a meaning on their own, they stop relying on others. It turns them into independent learners.
3️⃣ 𝗧𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀: Yes, really! 🎒 When we read a chapter before it's taught in school, we remove the fear of "studying." It turns a difficult lesson into a familiar story.
4️⃣ 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Billboards, menus, wrappers... reading these proves to the child that English isn't just a subject—it's a life skill. 🌍

👉 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗼𝗿𝘆!

So here's my wish for you: Instead of resolving to read 365 books (too much pressure!),
commit to just 10 minutes every single day.

10 minutes is:
✅ Doable even on your busiest day
✅ Builds HABIT, not a checklist
✅ 60+ hours of stories over a year
✅ Consistent presence in your child's learning

Your child doesn't need 365 books. They need your voice, daily, for 10 minutes.

My childhood best friends? They are right here. 📚✨

People often ask me why I started a library. The answer is sitting right at the top of this stack: Bimbo and Topsy.
That silly dog and cat were my first taste of independent reading. It was a gift from my parents, and I still remember laughing at their adventures.

Looking at this stack today, I can see my whole childhood journey through 𝗘𝗻𝗶𝗱 𝗕𝗹𝘆𝘁𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗰:

🐰 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀: Brer Rabbit and Mr. Twiddle taught me wit and humor.
🥪𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐢𝐜𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐬: I graduated to The Famous Five—not just for the mysteries, but for the bonds of friendship and those delectable picnics!
🦜 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: Then came Kiki the Parrot in the Adventure Series (The Castle of Adventure was a favourite!).
🏰 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗗𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺: I devoured Malory Towers and desperately wanted to be part of that boarding school world.

I know Enid Blyton is debated today, but for me, these weren't just stories. They were my imaginary friends. They made me a reader. And honestly? They still regale me today.

It’s heartbreaking to hear, but here is the good news: "𝐇𝐚𝐭𝐞" 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. It is usually a mask for something else.

This is me, Rucha, about a year old... apparently so eager to read, I didn't even care which way the book was facing!

This photo is the spark—a lifelong love for books and stories.

But the fire? That came years later, when I held a book just like this for my own daughter. That's when the drive began: to show her a world of magic where anything could be, an adventure more powerful and imagination-rich than any screen.

I got to relive it all: I watched our journey go from 'reading to her,' to 'reading with her,' and finally, to the magical moment of her reading all on her own.

That full-circle journey—from my own upside-down book to her independent reading—is the entire mission behind Yestoryd.

My wish for every child today is that same, can't-wait-to-read-it joy. And my wish for every parent is to get to feel that powerful connection.

Listening to him speak about the challenges of teaching English was so insightful. What resonated most with me, and affirmed the Yestoryd mission, was the reminder to focus on a child's skill of blending and segmenting, rather than getting stuck on a 'perfect' letter sound.
