Increasing access to services to prevent and lower the likelihood of cervical cancer during Cervical Health Awareness Month
Dr Vishal Sehgal, President of Portea Medical, emphasises that while a cheap and widely available vaccination can reduce the incidence of cervical cancer in India, other obstacles must also be removed. This can be accomplished by enhancing screening programmes and conducting widespread awareness campaigns to dispel vaccine-related fallacies.
Gynecological malignancies are becoming more prevalent in India, and cervical cancer is still the second most common malignancy among women there. 9.4% of all cancer cases and 18.3% (123,907) of all new cases in India in 2020 were related to it. With an anticipated 604,000 new cases in 2020, cervical cancer will rank as the fourth most frequent malignancy in women worldwide. In 2020, the predicted 342,000 fatalities from cervical cancer took place in low- and middle-income nations, accounting for almost 90% of the total.
Human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection, is responsible for almost 95% of occurrences of cervical cancer (STI). Low literacy and awareness, poor screening, social inequity, stigma, and poverty are some of the main causes of the increase in cases.
A pap test, which helps identify any abnormalities in the cervix's cells, is used to detect cervical cancer. Once this is completed, it will be feasible to initiate therapy quickly and stop the cancer from spreading.
How far have we come in India in terms of treatment and prevention?
The HPV vaccine and screening are two proven methods to lower cervical cancer. The condition can be prevented with vaccination, and early diagnosis through screening results in a better prognosis. The WHO unveiled a global plan to hasten cervical cancer eradication. It suggested that 70% of women be examined twice in their lifetime, 90% of women with cervical cancer receive the necessary treatment, and 90% of girls should receive the HPV vaccine by the time they are 15 years old. The situation is drastically different in India, where the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Stroke only recommends opportunistic screening (NPCDCS).
Given the limited resources, mandatory screening for HPV and vaccination are not even close to being possible. The HPV vaccination was first made available in 2008, although it is still not a part of the National Immunization Program. A vaccination that is at least ten times less expensive than the prior ones was just introduced. In addition to resolving the issue of pricing, it is hoped that this would result in more women receiving vaccinations. However, this is only a small portion of the issue. Before we get to the immunisation stage, there are still a few obstacles. The Indian community has very little knowledge regarding cervical cancer. Add to this the stigma attached to the illness, which prevents immunisation. This is because sexual activity is linked to cervical cancer, which further decreases people's willingness to act or speak out about it.
The function of at-home care
Cervical cancer can be prevented in part through vaccination and in part through screening. However, numerous studies have found that the readiness of facilities for cervical cancer screening varies greatly across India. This is made worse by the infrastructural and staffing gaps at the primary and secondary care levels, which pose a significant obstacle to the screening and immunisation processes. Studies imply that healthcare system quality and health policies have an impact on how people screen for cervical cancer. Public-private cooperation are crucial in this situation. It is possible to reach out to more women across all age groups by enhancing primary care through home-based screening and vaccination. Today's top outpatient care organisations in India have the ability to lead in this area.
The next step
While a cheap and widely available vaccine can reduce the incidence of cervical cancer in India, other obstacles must also be removed. This can be accomplished by boosting screening programmes and running widespread awareness campaigns to dispel vaccine-related fallacies. In this context, home healthcare plays a crucial role. In terms of a long-term, sustainable solution to India's rising cervical cancer burden, this is the only path ahead.

Tech Industry Leaders Fight for Privacy Awareness and Policies That Support It During Data Privacy Week
"Data Privacy Week began in 2021 and runs from January 22 through January 28. Every year, January 28 is marked as Data Privacy Day throughout the world. More than 50 nations around the world currently commemorate Data Privacy Day and highlight for an entire week why Data Privacy is of utmost significance. The event was first initiated by the Council of Europe in 2007. An international campaign to raise awareness of the value of protecting data, respecting privacy, and fostering trust is underway this week. Experts select a theme each year to raise awareness of a specific aspect of data privacy, and this year's theme is "Protecting Personal Information Data at Home and Work’."
Because of the unprecedented rate at which our reliance on technology has grown, we are placing a strong emphasis on data privacy. This is especially true after the epidemic, when practically all industries have switched to more technologically advanced, digitally friendly platforms and settings. Despite the fact that our society is becoming more digital, most people don't give data privacy any thought until their personal information has been compromised. The risk of a data breach rises along with the exponential growth in endpoints and our interaction with them. And with 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide, there is an unimaginable amount of unprotected data that is just ready to be taken.
We must realise that data security and privacy are two distinct ideas. Data privacy extends beyond simply protecting our passwords and personal information. It has more to do with the security precautions we take for our data. Rajesh Thadhani, Executive Director - Digital Transformation & Services at Crayon Software Experts India, says that this time can be used to educate our families, coworkers, and the general public, hold workshops, and direct people to a wealth of online articles on how to keep the data private and hope the measures work.
"Data privacy is a topic that receives a lot of discussion today since it is under danger. Today's widespread unauthorised and intentional data sharing has led to a rise in data privacy violations. It is imperative to widely raise knowledge of the distinctions between data privacy, protection, and security. In essence, this is where businesses and professionals fall short. The primary purpose of Data Privacy Week, which runs from January 22 through January 28, and Data Privacy Day, which falls on January 28, is to formally promote the issue of data privacy. Moreover, this year's topic, "Protecting Personal Data at Home and Work," is pertinent to technological growth.
BYOD is increasingly preferred across industries, and the number of gadgets that have enhanced data privacy has been debunked. The dark web has a big demand for stolen data or data that has been carelessly shared with even simple mobile applications since it enables market analysis and the creation of a targeted target map. Both strict rules and thorough user education regarding data privacy are required.
While a breach of data privacy may occasionally result in unsolicited calls from businesses, it may also take a dangerous turn, leading to identity theft, financial loss, and system manipulation, whether it be in a public or private setting. Keeping these factors in mind, it would be better for people to utilise their systems and gadgets carefully, whether they are for work or for personal use, and to share data only after fully understanding the hazards. While data sharing is inevitable in this digital age, data privacy can still be attained with the correct knowledge and precautions, especially if awareness is raised about it. The Delhi Police have increased patrolling and anti-terror measures in preparation for Republic Day.
New Delhi, Jan 20 (PTI): The Delhi Police have increased pickets, strengthened anti-terror measures, and increased patrolling ahead of the national capital's Republic Day celebrations, officials said on Friday.
All Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACsPs) and Station House Officers (SHOs) have met with members of the Residents Welfare Association and Market Welfare Associations to inform them on Republic Day security measures, they added.
The police have also advised the public to remain vigilant and report anything unusual.
According to the Delhi Authorities, they have also been raising awareness on social media, encouraging people to report or inform the police about any suspicious person, action, or item.
Tenant and servant verifications are being carried out, according to police, who also stated that surprise checks are being carried out at hotels, guest houses, and 'dharamshalas' to ensure that no suspicious or anti-social elements have taken the area illegally. Various districts have also performed mock drills to assess their readiness for anti-terror measures ahead of Republic Day, according to a senior police officer.
"Our security checks and anti-terror measures are robust, and we would not allow any mischief monger or terror criminal to function or succeed," stated Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Dependra Pathak.
"We are also informing the market and resident welfare associations, organising public forums, and other activities to combat anonymity and develop a thriving web of human relationships centred on in-place security." Officials say anti-terror efforts have been stepped up in collaboration with other security agencies because Delhi has always been a target for terrorists and anti-social groups.
Officers are on high alert this year. Extra pickets have also been deployed in bordering districts to guarantee that no rogue elements enter the national capital, according to officials.
Aside from internal Delhi Police meetings, inter-state coordination meetings are also held to guarantee there are no security lapses, according to a senior police official.
Checkpoints have been increased at malls, marketplaces, railway and metro stations, and bus terminals to ensure no untoward incidents occur, he said.
Other agencies, in addition to the Delhi Police team, are being deployed for anti-sabotage checks, he said. TDS PTI AMP TDS
