Son Meta-Preference is the phenomenon where parents continue to produce children until the desired number of sons are born. As a result, India has over 21 million ‘unwanted girl’ children (Economic Survey 2018). This phenomenon also regulates the contraceptive usage.
Population stabilisation and reproductive rights cannot be realised as long as this obsession with birthing sons continues.
