In a time when libraries are shrinking and knowledge is often seen as a privilege, Anke Gowda, a 75-year-old from Haralahalli village near Mysuru, Karnataka, has shown the world what true passion can build. What began as a young man’s love for reading has today blossomed into one of the largest free personal libraries in India — with nearly 20 lakh (2 million) books! 🌟

His journey is nothing short of inspiring. At the age of 20, while working as a bus conductor and pursuing his Master’s in Kannada literature, Anke Gowda began collecting books. Every spare rupee went into buying another volume. And when that wasn’t enough, he even sold his property in Mysuru to continue feeding his dream. What others saw as madness, he saw as a mission — to make knowledge available to everyone, regardless of wealth or status.

Today, his library stands as a living monument of sacrifice and vision, housing:
📖 20 lakh books across subjects and genres
🌍 5 lakh rare foreign editions
🗂️ 5,000+ dictionaries in multiple languages

What makes it extraordinary is its openness — no membership fees, no restrictions, no gates to keep learners out. From young students preparing for exams to researchers, civil service aspirants, and even Supreme Court judges — all find their way here. The library has become a temple of knowledge, where learning flows freely like light.

By his side, his wife Vijayalakshmi and son Sagar have been unwavering pillars of support, helping him nurture and preserve this treasure trove. Together, they remind us that a family’s greatest legacy is not land or wealth, but the wisdom they leave behind.
