West Asia remains central to global stability; home to major energy producers and critical trade routes that influence economies worldwide. Any shift in the region has immediate ripple effects on fuel prices, supply chains and geopolitical alignments. For India, these developments are especially significant, given our dependence on the region for energy security, trade linkages and the well-being of a large Indian diaspora.
Against this backdrop, the National Symposium on 'West Asia in a Fragmented Global Order', being organised by Gauhati University on 30th April 2026, aims to explore these complex yet deeply relevant issues in a clear and practical manner.
The symposium, initiated by the Centre for South East Asian Studies and the Department of Political Science, will feature M. J. Akbar as the Chief Guest, along with an inaugural address by Vice Chancellor Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta. The event will have expert panel discussions, student presentations and interactive sessions.

This Earth Day, themed 'Our Power, Our Planet,' reflects a simple truth - climate action is a shared responsibility. 🌍
India is making strides in renewable energy and sustainable practices, but rising demand and climate risks call for faster, collective action. From businesses adopting ESG frameworks to communities driving grassroots change, every effort counts.
A shift from intent to impact is the need of the hour - because the future of our planet depends on the choices we make today.

India’s carbon emissions growth has slowed sharply, with emissions rising just 0.7% in 2025 - the lowest increase in over two decades, according to a report.
This moderation is driven by rapid expansion of renewable energy, improved efficiency, and softer growth in power demand. Solar and wind continue to strengthen their share in the energy mix, helping offset coal-based generation.
While this signals progress, it is not yet a peak. With energy demand set to rise, sustaining this trend will require continued policy momentum, clean energy investments, and a faster transition away from coal.

India’s Carbon Emissions Growth Has Slowed: Report - The Wire
The country’s carbon emissions grew only by 0.5% in the second half of 2025 and by just 0.7% in the year as a whole compared to a growth of 4-11% over the four years before 2025

What happens in Greenland doesn’t stay in Greenland 🌍
A recent study has revealed that a sudden cooling event in Greenland around 8,200 years ago significantly weakened the Indian summer monsoon - showing just how deeply interconnected Earth’s climate systems are.
Researchers found that this cooling disrupted Atlantic ocean circulation and altered global wind patterns, leading to reduced monsoon intensity in India. Even more striking, it triggered a cool, dry phase across parts of the subcontinent, thousands of kilometres away from the source.
The takeaway?
Climate isn’t local - it’s a finely balanced global system.
As we navigate present-day climate shifts, insights like these remind us why understanding long-term patterns isn’t just academic - it’s essential for building resilience for the future.
