Small owlet with rounded head and dense barring all over the body. Lacks the false eyes on the back of the head possessed by many other owlets. There is no clear facial disk and the wings are brownish. Gives bursts of loud hollow trills, comparable to barbets, as well as a mellow “kaaaooo-kaaaaooo-kah-ow!” A forest species, found in densely wooded areas in lowlands and foothills.

Medium-sized owl. Brown overall, palest on belly, with streaks and spots on wings and chest. A large pale patch near the wingtips is easily visible in flight. It’s a winter visitor to the Indian subcontinent, one of the few species of owls known to migrate. Especially active around dawn and dusk, when it flies lazily over open fields or marshes in search of small mammals. Rarely heard vocalizing away from breeding grounds, where it makes a low series of hoots and a variety of harsh barking noises.

Small owl with a distinctive, highly angular head. Dark chestnut above and pale creamy gray below with light spotting on the sides. Dark eyes are emphasized by the general paleness of the face and the vertical dark ridges above them which form into small rounded tufts. Small and often difficult to find but can be common in a wide range of habitats, including evergreen forests and mangroves. Vocalizations are variable, and include rasps, screams, inflected gulping hoots, and a high-pitched mellow whistled song which can be likened to “hii-huu-huu-huwee-huwee-huwee”.

Medium-sized, rather slender owl with long "ear" tufts. They have large forward-facing eyes and ears, a hawk-like beak and a conspicuous circle of feathers around each eye called a facial disk. Strictly nocturnal; rarely seen foraging at dusk and dawn. Typical vocalization is a single low “woop” repeated every few seconds; also gives a wide range of maniacal catlike screeches and doglike barks. In India, the long-eared owl is a migratory species.
