NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday launched the 'Skill India Mission' in the national capital.

Here are the highlights of the PM's speech:

*The youth of the nation doesn't want to live a life of pity, they want to live with self respect & dignity.

*The country's first priority is generating employment for the youth of the country.

*We have to create structures and mechanisms to nurture youngsters, enabling them to find employment

*Through a policy driven approach we have waged a war against poverty and we have to win this war.

*I will form an army of poor, every poor is my soldier, we will win this war against poverty on behalf of their strength.

*It's not that skill only brings money in your pocket, it instills you with a sense of confidence, brings a new strength in life.

*We want opportunities to increase. That is why we have not restricted ourselves to skills, we have focussed on entrepreneurship.

*Skill India Mission is not just a prog to fill stomachs, but to instill self confidence in poor families and bring a new energy to nation.

*Parents from middle class, lower middle class and poor families ask their children to learn some skill so that they can stand on their feet.

*India will soon be the largest provider of skilled workforce to the world.

*If China has become the manufacturing capital of the world. India will be human resource capital of the world.

*Millions of youth shud acquire the skills that could contribute towards making India a modern country

IT sector in India is reeling under serious skill shortage. Although this doesn’t mean that possessing simple generic skills can get you a good IT job. The skill starved Indian IT sector is on the look-out for candidates with specialised skill-set. If you possess these niche skills, chances are, you might get head-hunted by the IT biggies.

Generic skills getting obsolete

Amidst this skill shortage, demand for generic skills is getting obsolete as niche skills are growing in demand. Stating the reasons for the same, Sundararajan Narayanan, vice president and global HR head, Virtusa, says, “With growing business demands, tech profiles are being screened for immediate requirements, the main objective of interview panels is to get the candidate accepted by the client on the current required skills. This leads to offering candidates based on most recent experience rather than basics. Emerging technologies with new skills and specific requirements makes the market wider for niche skills rather than generic skills.”
