Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, is the first day of the five-day Diwali festival celebrated in India. It falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (the dark fortnight) in the month of Ashwin, typically in October or November. The term "Dhanteras" is derived from the words "Dhan," meaning wealth, and "Teras," referring to the thirteenth day. On this auspicious day, people traditionally purchase gold, silver, utensils, or other precious items, as it is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune.
The day honors Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda and health, who is said to have emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) with a pot of amrit (nectar of immortality) in one hand. Many also worship Lord Kubera, the god of wealth, and Goddess Lakshmi, seeking their blessings for financial well-being and success.
Celebrations typically include cleaning and decorating homes with lamps, rangoli, and flowers. In the evening, people light oil lamps to ward off evil spirits and welcome prosperity into their homes.

Rudraksha refers to the seeds of a specific tree, the Elaeocarpus ganitrus, which grows predominantly in the Himalayan regions, parts of Southeast Asia, and Indonesia. These seeds are traditionally associated with Hindu spirituality and are believed to have special powers and spiritual significance. Rudraksha beads are often used to make rosaries (mala) for prayer and meditation in Hinduism, Buddhism, and other spiritual practices.
Spiritual Significance
Symbol of Lord Shiva: In Hindu mythology, Rudraksha beads are considered sacred and associated with Lord Shiva. They are often used by devotees of Shiva as a form of protection and a way to connect with the divine.
Healing Powers: Many believe that wearing Rudraksha beads can bring physical, mental, and spiritual benefits. It is said to help reduce stress, improve concentration, balance energy, and protect against negative influences.
Meditation Aid: Rudraksha malas, usually made of 108 beads, are used during meditation to keep count of mantras or prayers.
Types of Rudraksha
Rudraksha seeds have different "faces" or "mukhis," which are determined by the number of natural divisions or lines on the surface of the seed. Each type of Rudraksha is believed to have unique spiritual and health benefits. The most common ones are:
1 Mukhi: Considered rare and very powerful, believed to represent Lord Shiva himself.
5 Mukhi: The most common variety, representing Lord Kalagni Rudra, and often used for balancing the heart and promoting overall well-being.
Other Mukhis: Different seeds with varying numbers of lines (from 2 to 21) are said to have specific effects, linked to various deities and energies.
Scientific Perspective
From a scientific standpoint, Rudraksha seeds are organic and come from the fruit of the tree. The electromagnetic properties of the beads are thought to affect the body's bioelectric field, though these claims have not been widely studied in mainstream science.
In essence, Rudraksha beads are revered for their spiritual and symbolic meaning in many cultures, and they are worn for meditation, protection, and mental clarity.
