On behalf of Richard Vernon - Mayor of Montego Bay 🇯🇲 Richard Vernon | Mayor of Montego Bay , Councillor Javin Baker represented the Mayor at the launch of free public WiFi service in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay, an initiative spearheaded by the Universal Service Fund (Usf Jamaica) under the theme ‘USF Connec’ Di West’.
The initiative forms part of the USF’s nationwide effort to expand community access to free internet services, strengthen social connectivity, and bridge the digital divide by bringing technology closer to the people.
The event also featured several organizations and agencies that engaged residents through information sharing, giveaways, and access to a range of valuable services and resources.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security and Peace, the Hon. Horace A Chang, who officially launched the service, encouraged citizens to use the free WiFi responsibly, noting that it can also serve as an important tool in accessing digital services, including those provided by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
Initiatives such as these continue to create opportunities for greater connectivity, learning, and community empowerment across Montego Bay and western Jamaica.

The St. James Netball Foundation and the St James Municipal Corporation successfully concluded their Under 12 Netball Competition, bringing together nine schools from across the parish in a month of spirited competition, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
In the championship match, Corinaldi Avenue Primary School delivered a dominant performance to defeat Barracks Road Primary School Official 13 goals to 10 and reclaim the championship title. Earlier in the day, Mount Salem Primary-Infant secured third place with a convincing 5 goals to 2 victory over Anchovy Primary.
The competition provided a valuable platform for young athletes to showcase their talent, build confidence, and develop important life skills through sport. Congratulations to all participating schools, coaches, organizers, and supporters who contributed to the success of this year’s competition.

On June 9, 2026, Richard Vernon - Mayor of Montego Bay 🇯🇲 Richard Vernon | Mayor of Montego Bay welcomed members of the Kiwanis Club of Providence-Mobay during a courtesy call at the Mayor’s Office as the organization celebrates 36 years of service and impact.
The organization highlighted its continued support for persons with special needs through donations, gifts, and outreach initiatives, while also sharing plans to expand its charitable efforts across different communities.
Mayor Vernon spoke on the importance of cancer awareness and the effects the illness continues to have on individuals and families. Discussions were also held surrounding the Poor Relief Act and possible partnerships between the Kiwanis Club and the St James Municipal Corporation to further assist vulnerable residents across the parish.
Members also expressed gratitude to the Mayor’s Office for its support towards their annual Breast Cancer Run, as planning now begins for the 2026 staging of the event.

Richard Vernon - Mayor of Montego Bay 🇯🇲 Richard Vernon | Mayor of Montego Bay, met with members of the Bad Dawg By CB Foods vendor community on Friday, June 12, 2026, as part of the city’s ongoing Safe Food Programme, an initiative focused on improving food safety, sanitation, organization, and the overall visitor experience within the downtown commercial district.
The meeting addressed several concerns affecting vendors, including garbage collection and waste management. Representatives from WPM Waste Management Limited were present to engage vendors directly and discuss measures to improve the collection process and maintain a cleaner environment. Plans were also discussed for a major cleaning exercise in the area as efforts continue to enhance the space.
A key focus of the discussions was the organization of vending activities to create a more orderly and attractive environment for residents and visitors. Vendors were reminded of the shift system currently in place and encouraged to adhere to it as the city works toward achieving greater structure within the space. Mayor Vernon also called for improved storage solutions for vending carts, emphasizing that proper storage and maintenance are essential to maintaining a positive image of the city.
Vendors were further informed that they will be issued Safe Food Identification Cards as part of the programme’s ongoing efforts to strengthen food safety standards and build public confidence.
Mayor Vernon shared his vision for transforming the area into a well organized, clean, and welcoming space that can become a model for street vending in Montego Bay. He noted that with partnership, discipline, and investment in the right systems, the location has the potential to become an attraction in its own right, enhancing the city’s tourism product while creating greater opportunities for the vendors who operate there.
