MTRH Conducts Specialized ERCP Camp

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) is currently conducting a camp focused on Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), offering specialized procedures for patients with biliary and pancreatic conditions.

ERCP is an advanced procedure that combines upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with X-ray imaging to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the bile and pancreatic ducts, including stones, tumors, and blockages.

Performed under sedation, the procedure involves guiding a flexible endoscope through the mouth to the small intestine. This enables clinicians to inject contrast dye, visualize the ducts, and use specialized instruments to remove obstructions or obtain tissue samples.

The program is led by senior surgeons Dr. Andrew Wandera, Dr. David Koech, and Dr. Mercy Karoney, supported by a multidisciplinary team of nurses, anaesthetists, radiographers, and biomedical engineers.

The current camp has been scaled up through a training partnership with Indiana University, USA, strengthening local capacity in advanced endoscopic care.

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital Advances Bid for ECSACOG Accreditation Following High-Level Inspection

‎Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on April, 30, 2026 hosted a high-level inspection as part of its application to become an accredited training site under the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

‎The multidisciplinary inspection team was led by Dr. Nelly Bosire of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council, alongside Dr. Victor Mwita, Dr. Stella Kanja, and members of the KMPDC Secretariat. Representing ECSACOG were Dr. Musimbi Soita and Prof. Justus Barigye.

‎This accreditation effort aligns with a regional strategy launched by ECSA Ministries of Health in 2017 to expand specialist training capacity and address shortages of skilled obstetricians and gynecologists across East, Central, and Southern Africa.

‎MTRH’s Chief Executive Officer was represented by Dr. Benjamin Tarus, Senior Director for Administration and Finance. The Hospital’s preparation and technical coordination were led by Dr. Wycliffe Kosgei, Director of Reproductive Health.

‎Upon approval, the ECSACOG program at MTRH will be led by Dr. Noah Bett as Program Director, with Dr. Richard Mogeni serving as Deputy Program Director and Dr. Philippe Poli as Program Coordinator.

‎The inspection drew participation from specialist obstetricians and gynecologists across MTRH and Moi University, underscoring strong academic–clinical collaboration. Among those present was Prof. Paul Nyongesa.

‎The inspection team conducted a detailed evaluation of clinical and support units designated for resident training. Areas assessed included the Riley Mother and Baby Hospital (Labour Ward, Antenatal and Postnatal Wards, and Emergency Department), as well as the Newborn Unit, Operating Theatres, Laboratory, Radiology Department, and Reproductive Health Outpatient Clinics.

‎During the debriefing, Dr. Bosire noted that MTRH has met most requirements for accreditation, citing adequate infrastructure, staffing levels, and institutional capacity to support a faculty-led training program.

‎The team highlighted the Newborn Unit as a regional benchmark for quality care and commended its standards. They also emphasized the need to strengthen emergency response systems to further enhance patient outcomes.

‎When accredited, the ECSACOG program will complement MTRH’s existing ECSA-affiliated training programs, including COSECSA, ECSACOP, COECSA, CANECSA, and COPECSA.
