The Ahero-Awasi Municipality KUSP II Technical Committee on Implementation held a meeting today to assess the progress of proposed projects and review their implementation against the approved project scope.

The meeting provided an opportunity for the Committee to evaluate progress made, deliberate on emerging issues, and identify measures to facilitate effective and timely implementation of the projects.

The Committee reaffirmed the importance of ensuring that all proposed interventions remain aligned with the Municipality’s development priorities and the objectives of the Kenya Urban Support Programme II (KUSP II), with a focus on delivering sustainable and impactful outcomes for the residents of Ahero-Awasi Municipality.

AHERO TOWN FIRE OUTBREAK

Some parts of Ahero Market was engulfed by fire early this morning, destroying shops and stalls causing significant losses to traders.

The fire was, however, swiftly contained thanks to the rapid response from the Kisumu City Fire Department, which arrived in time to prevent the blaze from spreading to the rest of the market following the alert from the Municipal Manager .

The successful operation was further strengthened by the prompt coordination of the Ahero-Awasi Municipality Manager, Mr. Lazarus Orengo, Ahero OCS, Market leadership and traders who have worked closely with the fire department to bring the situation under control.

Although some businesses were destroyed, the quick and well coordinated response helped avert the further spread of this disaster. The cause of the fire has not yet been established but investigations are underway.

Since its establishment, Ahero–Awasi Municipality has continued to distinguish itself as a model municipality in Kisumu County through its commitment to sustainable urban development, improved service delivery, and community-focused initiatives.

Under the leadership of Municipal Manager Mr. Lazarus Juma, the municipality has made notable progress in creating a cleaner, safer, and more resilient urban environment. Key interventions include regular drainage maintenance to improve water flow and mitigate flooding, continuous waste management and clean-up activities in Ahero and Awasi markets, and ongoing greening and beautification programs that are enhancing the municipality’s environmental sustainability and visual appeal.

The municipality has also secured funding through the World Bank-supported Kenya Urban Support Programme II (KUSP II) to implement transformative development projects. These include the construction of storm water drainage lines, installation of floodlights at Ahero Junction, and greening initiatives across the municipality. As part of the project preparation process, the project team recently conducted a pre-tender site visit attended by all prospective contractors, marking an important milestone ahead of the commencement of works.

Once completed, these projects will strengthen urban resilience, improve flood management, enhance security and visibility, and contribute to a more attractive and livable urban environment for residents and businesses.

These achievements reflect the municipality’s unwavering commitment to responsive governance, sustainable development, and improving the quality of life for the people of Ahero and Awasi.

Awasi Drainage Cleaning Exercise Underway

The Ahero–Awasi Municipality is currently undertaking a comprehensive drainage cleaning exercise within Awasi Town. This initiative is aimed at improving stormwater flow, preventing flooding, enhancing sanitation, and creating a cleaner and healthier environment for residents and businesses.

Today, the project team conducted a pre-tender site visit for the proposed construction of storm water lined drains, installation of floodlights, and greening works in Ahero under KUSP 2.

The exercise brought together the Municipal Engineer, Physical Planner, Environmental Officer, other County staff, and prospective contractors to assess site conditions and discuss key project requirements ahead of implementation.

These planned interventions are aimed at improving drainage, enhancing public safety through better lighting, and promoting a greener, more attractive urban environment for the residents of Ahero.

AHERO TOWN ROADS REHABILITATION & DRAINAGE CLEANUP UNDERWAY
