Kenya remains one of the leading countries in Africa in advancing holistic youth empowerment through impactful and transformative programs aimed at creating sustainable opportunities for young people.

NYOTA Project Management Unit and the World Bank had the privilege of hosting a delegation from Botswana for a benchmarking visit on Kenya’s youth-centered initiatives, including the NYOTA Project and its precursor project, the Kenya Youth Empowerment Project (KYEOP).

The delegation led by NYOTA Project officials later visited KYEOP beneficiary Joan Kinyanjui in Juja Town, the founder of Yatta Beekeepers. Joan began her journey as a small-scale farmer in 2016 before receiving grant support that enabled her to expand her business significantly. Today, she produces honey on a large scale, which has created employment opportunities for other youths, trains farmers on modern beekeeping practices, and supplies beekeeping equipment to local farmers. She also looks forward to venturing into apitherapy in the near future; a simple natural wellness practice that uses bee products such as honey and bee venom, inspired by the healing properties of bees and their natural “buzzing” environment.

The team also visited Dr. Chege Mbiu, a dentist and founder of Arrow Dental Clinic in Thika.
He established Arrow Dental Clinic in Thika through the Mbele na Biz initiative under KYEOP and has since expanded to two additional branches, creating employment opportunities for other young people who are now able to sustainably support themselves and their families.

The NYOTA Project continues to transform lives across the country by equipping young people with skills, financial support, and opportunities that enable them to build sustainable livelihoods and contribute meaningfully to economic growth.

Kenya’s youth empowerment and social protection models continue to attract regional interest and collaboration.

The NYOTA Project hosted a consultative forum with a delegation from the Government of Botswana at the office of Principal Secretary Susan Auma Mang'eni Cbs, State Department for MSME Development, as part of a study visit to benchmark on the design, governance, and implementation of youth employment and social protection initiatives in Kenya.

The engagement provided a platform for knowledge exchange on workplace-based training through the On-the-Job Experience (OJE) model, digitized youth support systems, labor market integration, social protection frameworks and strategies for strengthening youth inclusion and economic resilience.

The discussions reaffirmed the importance of collaborative African solutions in addressing youth unemployment, skills development and sustainable economic empowerment.

📍Kenya continues to strengthen regional partnerships in advancing youth empowerment and MSME development.

The State Department for MSME Development today hosted a strategic bilateral meeting with delegation from BOTSWANA to share insights on youth livelihood interventions, financial inclusion and the implementation of the NYOTA Initiative.

The engagement provided an opportunity for knowledge exchange on scalable youth empowerment models, digital accessibility through USSD technology, grassroots mobilization and innovative approaches to economic inclusion across Africa.

Together, we continue to champion solutions that empower young people, strengthen communities, and drive sustainable development across the continent.
