At 35, Abdirashid Mwaura Says he is the Best Bet for Lamu West Constituency
With only six months remaining to the August 9 General Election, Lamu West constituency has already attracted tens of aspirants who have declared their interest in vying for the position.
The seat is currently occupied by incumbent Stanley Muiruri Muthama of the Maendeleo Chap Chap and an ally to Raila Odinga’s Azimio la Umoja.
Among the leading candidates who have already announced their plan to contest for the Lamu West MP seat is 35-year-old Abdirashid Mwaura.
Mr Mwaura of the Azimio La Umoja told Opera News Hub on Monday that he is more than ready to fight it out with anyone interested to vie for the position in the forthcoming August 9, 2022, General Election, adding that he is going to win.
Born in Mpeketoni’s Hongwe Village in Lamu West in 1987, Mr Mwaura went to Igwamiti Primary School in Nyandarua before joining Rurii Secondary School in Olkolou, Nyandarua.
After completing his secondary education, he went to Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) where he pursued and completed a Degree Course in Computer Engineering.
Mr Mwaura says being an enlightened youth who has also been engaging in strong-people-centred and community-driven initiatives with a long history of helping the vulnerable people in Lamu makes him the best bet for Lamu West residents.
He insists that his intention once elected Lamu West MP come August 9 is to fill all the development gaps that are currently being witnessed in the constituency.
Mr Mwaura said his interest is to serve and work for the people of Lamu West, especially the youth and women in an effort to eradicate poverty and marginalization.
He noted that many youths in the constituency are unemployed, a situation that has resulted in poverty in society.
“Part of my agenda is to ensure there’s empowerment and employment for both the youth and women so that everyone is fully involved in development issues in the constituency, hence becoming self-reliant. I will also ensure projects coming to Lamu prioritize the locals in terms of contracts and tenders issued,” said Mr Mwaura.
Mr Mwaura says another key reason behind his interest to vie for the Lamu West MP Seat is the fact that the constituency is rich in many natural resources that he fills are not fully tapped.
He says Lamu West is rich in wildlife and building stones that leaders in power have not been able to come up with strategies on how such resources can be developed to benefit the local residents.
“There is increased human-wildlife conflicts but no leader has tabled a motion in parliament on how special zones for wild animals can be created in Lamu to attract tourists and bring revenue. Apart from that, even the locals injured or killed by wildlife haven’t been compensated. I call on the residents of Lamu West to elect me in August so that I forward a motion in parliament on the same,” said Mr Mwaura.
He said once elected, his focus will also be on ensuring there is peace, security, and education for all.
“I want to bring quality leadership in Lamu West that will focus fully on unity, peace, education for all as well as an improved living standard amongst the residents,” he said.
He assured the Lamu West constituents of transparency and accountability in his leadership where mwananchi will be fully involved in decision-making on matters projects, problems encountered, what their priorities are, and direct engagements with the citizens on how such issues will be resolved or how priority projects will be implemented.
“I want to bring a change that people can believe and trust in, including empowering the residents in a way that will make them work for themselves. Advocacy leadership is the one I want to fight for. I want to ensure people are part and parcel of any decision-making, including identifying their problems and priorities and working towards solving or accomplishing such issues. CDF allocations will also be all-inclusive and this will, in turn, prevent any form of corruption or wastage or resources,” said Mr Mwaura.
