This morning I was reading about the Butterfly Effect. Someone was explaining how the seemingly little and inconsequential flaps of a butterfly can blow up to cause storms. Then I remembered an encounter I had with a young, newly admitted advocate, in Kisumu, in the run-up to the LSK Elections of 2018.
I had just finished talking to a group of Advocates in a hotel in Kisumu when this lady unabashedly pulled me aside and opened up about her tribulations at the law firm where she was an associate. She complained of repeated and unwelcome sexual overtures from her boss and asked me, "is there something you will do about it?" I could sense helplessness and resignation in her voice.
My first impulse, as an aspirant, was to confidently assert 'Yes. I have it all figured out,' but I restrained myself since I could see the sincerity in her plea, and I didn't want to lie to her so. Instead, I told her "I will not promise that I have a solution to your problem immediately, but I'll ask you to hang in there. Do not give in. When I get to Council, I'll do what I can, however little it might be, to stem this problem."
Fast forward, when I got into Council, first in my agenda was to come up with the Sexual Harassment and Anti-Bullying Policy. Together with the Gender Committee, which I convened, we visited the branches to collect views from the members. Finally, we came up with the Sexual Harrassment and Anti-Bullying Policy that presently protects all employees in the workplace from unwelcome sexual advances.
I often think about that one moment of vulnerability, and how much came of it. Hadn't the young lady pulled me aside to confide in me about her personal struggles, would we have had the motivation to come up with the policy? I have come to see value in little, genuine, and deliberate acts; in good time, they amount to much.
Therefore, I urge you to keep flapping. Go out there, do your bit, and the universe will do the rest.
