Today at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), we mark the 5th National School Meals Coalition Meeting and celebrate the Coalition’s 1st Anniversary — reflecting on achievements, strengthening partnerships, and aligning efforts toward providing nutritious, climate-friendly school meals to 10 million children by 2030.

Today NACONEK, led by the CEO NACONEK Mr. Harun Yussuff, participated in validation workshop on Institutional Clean Cooking Sector Pack at Radisson blu Hotel- Nairobi. The workshop was convened by InvestKenya and Office of Special Envoy on Climate Change.

The Investor Pack highlighted the Investment opportunities in transitioning public schools as clear investable opportunity that can accelerate nationwide adoption. During his remarks our CEO noted that NACONEK presented a ready pipeline opportunity for investment and that the sector pack will play a key role in strengthening investor confidence. He further noted that there is need to consider proper coordination, blended finance and policy alignment to allow for unlocking investments in transitioning public schools.

🏆 A proud moment for NACONEK!
NACONEK emerged the 2nd runner-up in the State Corporations and SAGAs Reporting under IPSAS Accrual Category in the Financial Reporting (FiRe) Awards.
The FiRe Awards is a prestigious annual event that celebrates excellence in financial reporting across East Africa, with a focus on promoting integrated reporting, accountability, transparency, and integrity.
On behalf of the NACONEK CEO Mr. Harun Yussuf, the trophy was presented to Director Corporate Services Mr Murumbi Chiuli accompanied by Deputy Director Finance & Accounts CPA Ibrahim Dagane and staff members from various directorates.
This award is a strong affirmation of the Council’s commitment to best practices, good governance, and accountability.

During the final day of the KEPSHA 2025 AGM, at the panel session on School Meals: Nurturing Potential, Advancing CBE, and Driving Sustainable Futures, key players in the school meals space shared valuable insights. Keziah Wandera, Head of Programmes & Projects at NACONEK, emphasized that school meals are a vital investment in learners’ health, concentration, and attendance driving equity, supporting CBC outcomes, and strengthening local food systems through community and farmer involvement.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Mr. Julius Migos Ogamba, EBS, today officially opened the KEPSHA 2025 National AGM and Conference at Sheikh Ali Zayed Children’s Home in Mombasa. He was accompanied by the Principal Secretary for Basic Education, Amb. Prof. Julius Bitok, and H.E. Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Governor of Mombasa County, among other key dignitaries. Also in attendance was NACONEK CEO, Mr. Harun Yussuf, who joined education stakeholders for the opening ceremony.

In his address, the Cabinet Secretary lauded headteachers as central to delivering quality foundational education, emphasizing that their leadership is critical to the success of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). He further urged delegates to focus on strengthening resource management, school leadership, teacher welfare, digital transformation, and inclusive education.

Today, NACONEK participated in a distinguished Summit graced by Her Excellency Mrs Rachel Ruto, First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Mr. Julius Ogamba, esteemed members of the Diplomatic Corps, governmental officials, development partners, and representatives from the private sector, all convening for a High-Level Summit on Unlocking Finance and Investments for Institutional Clean Cooking.

The First lady expressed her appreciation of NACONEK for spearheading the institutional clean cooking initiative. She also stated that its high time the project moves from piloting stage to contracts signing stage to enable the Country move ahead with Clean cooking program.

The Cabinet Secretary aims to redefine school meals by integrating food security, environmental stewardship, public health, innovation, and economic growth. Government of Kenya prioritizes universal education and sustainable learning environments. School Meals Programme is a key part of this vision.
Development partners should align funding and support for roll-out. Private sector, especially local manufacturers, should invest in clean cooking tech and create jobs. County governments should incorporate initiative into school feeding and energy plans.

NACONEK CEO, Mr. Harun M. Yussuf, delivered a presentation highlighting the pivotal milestones achieved since the inception of the clean cooking project and the current status of the initiatives. He underscored the formidable challenges posed by substantial upfront capital requirements, which hinder schools from financing necessary infrastructure enhancements, as well as the ongoing operational and maintenance expenses. Mr. Yussuf subsequently urged all stakeholders to wholeheartedly embrace the transition to clean cooking, to mobilize strategic partnerships and investments, to foster innovation and community engagement, and to serve as advocates for this vital transition.
