In its continued drive to redirect Botswana towards industrialization of its economy, the University of Botswana through the Department of Industrial Design and Technology hosted this year’s annual Degree under the theme - Design and Enterprise Development: A key to Economic Diversification. Speaking at the Show held at the UB Campus Indoor Sports Centre on July 26,2023, Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja said the theme resonated with Botswana’s Vision 2036 pillar of achieving prosperity for all through transformation and innovation for sustainable economic development.
It showcases innovative prototypes, products and services designed and developed by final year Design and Technology and Industrial Design students. Most importantly, it offers designers and excellent networking environment with potential employers, investors and industry. Ms Makwinja noted that such efforts edified the creation of a knowledge-based economy and development of Botswana’s manufacturing and service sectors. The Assistant Minister further observed that the first-generation prototypes on display were a gateway to scalable enterprises, growing the manufacturing industry and additionally contributing to Botswana’s Gross Domestic Products.
The best design prototype prize went to Mr. Ompatile Malopela, who was awarded a scholarship by the Vice Chancellor to pursue a Master’s degree programme at the University of Botswana. Mr Licon Magosi took position two, while third position went to Mr Botho Chabaditsile.

The Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Education and Skills Development and Member of Parliament for Lentsweletau-Mmopane, Honourable Nnaniki Wilhemina Tebogo Makwinja in her capacity as the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Caucus on Women in Botswana attended the Maputo Protocol which is a High Level Intergenerational Dialogue on Women in Political Participation held in Nairobi, Kenya on the 10th – 11th July 2023. The event was co-hosted by the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) as part of the Enhancing Women’s Political Participation Project. The high-level intergenerational dialogue is a platform for reflection on the gains of the Protocol as well as the challenges faced as Africa continues to grapple with low participation of women in politics. International IDEA has formed a Gender consortium with six other partners on Enhancing Participation of Women in Political Participation in Africa. The project is implemented in eight African countries; Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Kenya, Senegal, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania and Cote d'Ivoire. This undertaking, which is funded by the Embassy of Sweden in Ethiopia with the overall goal of increasing the political participation and representation of women in Africa in accordance with the Maputo Protocol of 2003, sub-regional protocols and standards and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Botswana is yet to sign the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa. Though not signed, Botswana was congratulated for legislative reforms at the just ended High level Intergenerational Dialogue on Women in Political Participation held in Kenya and has done well compared to those countries which have signed this Protocol. The Government of Botswana has also signed the SADC Gender Protocol but has not reached the 30% recommended by this Protocol.

PRESS RELEASE
THE NATION INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE AFRICAN VACCINATION WEEK (AVW) NEXT WEEK
The Ministry of Health wishes to inform members of the public that Botswana will join other countries to celebrate African Vaccination Week (AVW) from the 24th to 28th of April 2023, under the theme: The Big Catch Up, (Catching up on children who missed routine vaccinations). This year’s AVW is geared towards reaching children who missed vaccination during the years 2020 to 2022, due to various reasons like disruptions caused by the COVID–19 pandemic. Those who missed some part of their vaccination in 2019 are also encouraged to participate.
The aim of the African Vaccination Week is to strengthen immunization programmes in the African region, by promoting the use of vaccines to protect people of all ages against vaccine preventable diseases, thus allowing communities to live healthier and happier lives.
The African Vaccination Week provides the Ministry of Health (MoH) with an opportunity to reach children who missed out on vaccines and to restore essential immunization coverage in Botswana to the pre-COVID-19 era. This will in the end help strengthen primary health care to deliver immunization and build lasting protection in communities.
Therefore, the ministry encourages parents and caregivers to take all affected children, aged five (5) years and below, to the nearest health facility in order to catch up on the missed vaccines from the 24th to 28th April 2023.
For more information, please contact the nearest health facility or call 363 2500.
Thank you.
Yours faithfully
Dr Christopher Nyanga
