LEARNING FROM GLOBAL BEST PRACTICE TO STRENGTHEN KENYA’S AVIATION SECTOR - BRISTOL AIRPORT VISIT
The Principal
Secretary for Aviation and Aerospace Development, Ms. Teresia Mbaika-CBS led a delegation to Bristol Airport in the United Kingdom for a two-day knowledge exchange focused on aviation security and operational efficiency.
The engagement provided valuable insights into key areas of interest, including airport security management, forecasting and planning to optimise operations, management of contracted services, and effective stakeholder engagement.
Handling nearly 11 million passengers annually, Bristol Airport offers useful operational lessons, including how airport activities are managed within defined operating hours, with scheduled departures closing at 10:00 p.m.
The Bristol Airport team was led by Ms Caroline Vear , Head of Security and Mr James Power, Manager, Security, Compliance and Engagement.
The exchange comes at an opportune time as Kenya advances the modernisation of the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and strengthening the operational capacity of its airports.
Learning from established international practices will help inform approaches to improving security, service delivery, resource utilisation and the passenger experience.
The PS expressed appreciation to the UK Department for Transport for facilitating the visit and enabling valuable knowledge sharing.
By embracing international best practice and adapting relevant lessons to Kenya’s context, the State Department aims to support safer, more efficient and commercially sustainable airports that enhance passenger experience and strengthen Kenya’s position as a regional aviation hub.
