Today, we joined National leaders, County leaders and community of Taita Taveta County at Rekeke Primary School, Mata Ward, to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Ge***al Mutulation(FGM).

The event highlighted key facts and emerging concerns surrounding FGM. FGM prevalence in Taita Taveta County stands at 17 percent, above the national average of 15 percent, underscoring the need for intensified interventions. The practice continues to expose girls to serious health complications, psychological trauma, school dropout, and long-term social and economic consequences.

The Government of Kenya reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the elimination of FGM through strengthened legal frameworks, policy implementation, community sensitization, education, and investment in protection systems, in line with the 2026 global theme, โ€œAccelerating Investment to End Female Ge***al Mutilation.โ€

The Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Hon.Hanna Wendot Cheptumo called upon community leaders, parents, religious institutions, educators, and all stakeholders to champion behavioural change, support alternative rites of passage, and safeguard the rights, dignity, and future of every girl.

The Government of Kenya marks the retirement of Ms. Monicah Adhiambo Omoro, Director, Public Communication, Directorate of Public Communications, on 29th December 2025, after 40 years of distinguished service in the Civil Service.

Ms. Omoro began her public service career at 19 years of age, graduating with a Diploma in Journalism from the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) in 1987, and subsequently serving as a News Reporter for Kenya News Agency - KNA , Mariakani, Mombasa and Killifi Counties for 18 years before working as the incharge, Public Communication, Relations or Press Departments for the remaining 22 years for across various Ministries, Departments and Agencies including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Trade, The then Ministry of National Heritage & Culture, Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife,Ministry of Gender, Children & Social Protection, Ministry of Planning - Uwezo Oversight Funds, Kenya News Agency , Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), and the Multi-Agency Command Centre on COVID-19.Ministry of ICT, Innovation and Youth Affairs, State Department for Correctional Services, Ministry of Information Communication and The Digital Affairs , Ministry of Sports, Youth Affairs & Creative Affairs among others.

However, this Directorate has a Substantive, Secretary Public Communication who is incharge of it.

The government is in the process of recruiting 25 Directors of Public Communications within the planned recruitment of 414 Technical Information & Public Communication through Public Service Commission of Kenya in early 2026.

During her tenure, Ms. Omoro contributed significantly to enhancing the Governmentโ€™s corporate image, visibility, identity, and reputation.

She played a key role in landmark legislations and policies such as the Heroes & Heroines Act (2014), Water Act (2016), National Water Policy, Data Protection Act (2019), Water Sector Reform Communication Policy, and the Government Communication Strategy (2024โ€“2027), Draft National Communication Policy which is at the tail end of its finalization.

As Director, Directorate of Public Communications (2024โ€“2025), Ms. Omoro provided strategic leadership to over 160 Public Communication Officers and 215 Public Communication Assistants, spearheading reforms aimed at addressing job stagnation and enhancing government visibility ( ).

She particularly, spearheaded the waiving of the requirements that for you to be a Director Public Communication , you must be a Deputy Director Public Communication for three years....and now requirement is that you must be An Assistant Director, Public Communication/ Information.

This will paved way for these Technical Officers who have stagnated professionally for many years, to be successful considered , for the 25 Director Positions set to be soon advertised.

Again, due to efforts spearheaded by SDBT..a circular from The National Treasury and Economic Planning guided all Principal Secretaries/ Accounting Officers in MDAs to enhance the Communication Budgetary lines with resources to ensure the Government's Corporate Image, Identity, Visibility and Reputation is enhanced for improved Services to the Public.

These two processes of Promotion of Technical Staff & Budgetary allocations for PCO..we're spearheaded by PS Steve Isaboke EBS , Broadcasting & Telecommunications and former PS BT now Advisor to the President Prof Edward Waswa Kisiangโ€™ani, HRMAC Members and other Senior Officials from SDBT.

Ms Omoro was at the heart of these two processes

A holder of a Masterโ€™s Degree in Communication Studies and a Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Mass Communication & Media Studies from the University of Nairobi, Ms. Omoro leaves a lasting legacy of professionalism, integrity, and excellence in public service.

As she retires on 29th, December, 2025, she transitions into a new chapter as an Individual Communication Specialist, offering her expertise in designing, implimenting , monitoring , evaluating and reviewing communication strategy, training, service charters, Media Coverage , website development, and programme implementation to institutions and stakeholders.among offering key Communication Support.
