Today, we joined National leaders, County leaders and community of Taita Taveta County at Rekeke Primary School, Mata Ward, to mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Ge***al Mutulation(FGM).
The event highlighted key facts and emerging concerns surrounding FGM. FGM prevalence in Taita Taveta County stands at 17 percent, above the national average of 15 percent, underscoring the need for intensified interventions. The practice continues to expose girls to serious health complications, psychological trauma, school dropout, and long-term social and economic consequences.
The Government of Kenya reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the elimination of FGM through strengthened legal frameworks, policy implementation, community sensitization, education, and investment in protection systems, in line with the 2026 global theme, โAccelerating Investment to End Female Ge***al Mutilation.โ
The Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Hon.Hanna Wendot Cheptumo called upon community leaders, parents, religious institutions, educators, and all stakeholders to champion behavioural change, support alternative rites of passage, and safeguard the rights, dignity, and future of every girl.
