HomeNet Kenya is a homebased workers membership-based organization, launched on 10th December, 2020

31/01/2026

HomeNet Kenya has consistently been a champion in sustainability and livelihood development initiatives, providing leadership and practical models that continue to inspire the region. Over the past few months, deliberate efforts have been undertaken to organize a resource mobilization training aimed at strengthening the capacity of organizations working within this space.

This initiative was made possible through the leadership of the Regional Coordinator for Africa, Edwin Bett, who worked closely with the National Executive Committee for Homenet Kenya.
Through this collaboration, a strategic partnership was established with The National Environment Trust Fund, enabling the successful delivery of the resource mobilization training.

The training convened country networks from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Liberia, Ghana, Rwanda, and Zimbabwe, creating a dynamic platform for regional learning, knowledge exchange, and collaboration. This engagement strengthened the collective understanding of sustainable financing, enhanced cross-country partnerships, and reinforced Kenya’s role as a regional leader in sustainability and livelihood development.

The intended impact is to empower participating organizations with the knowledge, tools, and networks required to mobilize resources more effectively, scale their interventions, and strengthen community resilience across the region.

🌍 Homenet Kenya Hosts Focus Group Discussion on Climate Change & Its Impact on Home-Based Workers

Homenet Kenya brought together home-based workers and HBW leaders from across the country for an insightful focused group discussion on climate change—its realities, its impact, and what must be done to protect and empower home-based workers.

Participants shared the changes they are experiencing in their daily work—rising temperatures, unpredictable weather, environmental health risks, and disruptions to their income. Together, we discussed the impact of these changes, the practical ways HBWs are coping, and the support needed to build resilience within the sector.

This conversation is an important step toward ensuring that home-based workers are not left behind in climate action and policy responses. We are committed to advocating for safety, awareness, social protection, and sustainable livelihoods that can withstand the challenges of a changing climate.

💚 Strengthening resilience.
💚 Protecting livelihoods.
💚 Centering home-based workers in climate solutions.

✨ Pushing Forward the HNI Campaign on ILO C177 - Homework Convention! ✨

With the ongoing HNI campaign on ILO C177, HomeNet Kenya had the incredible opportunity to engage its members in a powerful discussion on what ILO C177 is, why it matters, and how it can be effectively implemented for homeworkers.

📅 On 27th November, our members from across the 13 clusters came together for an insightful meeting focused on understanding the Convention on Homework and the importance of its ratification in Kenya.

The session also clearly highlighted a roadmap with key steps toward the ratification of C177, strengthening our shared commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of all homeworkers.

💪 Together, we move closer to securing dignity, recognition, and fair working conditions for homeworkers across the country.

For millions of women and men who work from their homes, economic justice looks like:

🔹 Fair pay for long hours of skilled work
🔹 Recognition in labour laws and national statistics
🔹 Access to social protection — health insurance, pensions, maternity benefits
🔹 Safe and dignified working conditions
🔹 Transparent, fair supply chains instead of exploitation by middlemen
🔹 Affordable tools, materials, and access to markets
🔹 The right to organise and bargain collectively
🔹 Respect for unpaid care work, which falls heavily on women
🔹 Freedom from poverty and predatory debts
🔹 A voice in economic decisions that shape their lives

Home-based workers are the hidden engine of many industries — yet they remain invisible and underpaid.
Economic justice means changing that.

Let’s stand with them.
Let’s raise their voices.
Let’s demand fairness for the workers behind the closed doors of the global economy.

🌍 Happy International Home-Based Workers Day!

Today, we celebrate the strength, creativity, and resilience of millions of home-based workers around the world — the invisible hands behind our clothes and crafts. ✨

You are workers, caregivers, and changemakers — balancing home and work, building communities, and driving local and global economies, often without recognition or protection.

Let’s raise our voices for fair wages, social protection, and recognition for all home-based workers. Because work from home is still work — and it deserves dignity, respect, and rights!
