"Blindness" is a novel written by Portuguese author José Saramago and published in 1995. The story explores a world in which an epidemic of "white blindness" suddenly spreads, affecting a significant portion of the population.

The narrative follows an unnamed protagonist, referred to as the "Doctor's Wife," who remains unaffected by the epidemic. Her husband, however, encounters one of the first victims and contracts the blindness. The Doctor's Wife pretends to be blind to remain with her husband and is the only person who can see in a world plunged into darkness.

The government responds by quarantining the blind in an abandoned mental institution, which quickly becomes overcrowded and chaotic. The situation deteriorates as hygiene conditions worsen, supplies become scarce, and the blind struggle to maintain order and preserve their humanity. Throughout the story, the characters face numerous challenges, including violence, hunger, and the loss of social norms.

As the Doctor's Wife navigates the bleak and deteriorating environment, she forms relationships with other characters, including the King of Ward Three, a group of women, and an old man with an eyepatch who becomes her companion. They face numerous moral dilemmas, including theft, betrayal, and survival instincts in the face of extreme adversity.

The novel delves into themes of power, societal breakdown, and the fragility of civilization. Saramago uses the blindness as a metaphor for the moral and spiritual blindness present in society, questioning humanity's ability to confront its darkest aspects. The story also explores the importance of empathy, compassion, and the preservation of human dignity.
