UPDATE: President William Ruto and opposition leader Raila Odinga have reached an agreement on sharing National Assembly committee leadership positions to prevent a legislative deadlock. This deal comes after a contentious ruling on which political side holds the majority in the House. The negotiations aimed to ensure smooth parliamentary operations and prevent further divisions between the ruling Kenya Kwanza alliance and the opposition Azimio coalition.

The high-level meeting at State House, Monday, was attended by key government and opposition figures, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot, and his Minority counterpart Steward Madzayo. Also present were National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, and Minority Whip Millie Odhiambo. During the discussions, Azimio agreed to withdraw their push to impeach Speaker Moses Wetangula, signaling a step toward political cooperation.

As part of the agreement, President Ruto conceded to Azimio taking leadership of several influential parliamentary committees that were previously chaired by Kenya Kwanza lawmakers. This move saw allies of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua lose key positions. Among the committees that Azimio will now lead are Budget and Appropriation, Health, Trade and Industry, Labour, and Regional Integration, strengthening their influence in crucial legislative matters.
