As we explore how to transform agriculture in Africa, the Kenyan afenda is critical as an example. Through the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) we have created a model of linking Universities with Agriculture, Health with Education by establishing Centers for Agriculture, Nutrition, Data Analytics and Innovation (CANDAI) for Policy Impact.

The one layer that has been lacking has been the optimization of the farmer linked supply chains. In Murang'a County, the government has embraced the One Ward, One Cooperative (OWOC) agenda to promote the convergence of Commodities and Livestock into one Cooperative per Ward. The County is promoting this within its recent formulation of an Agroecology Act and Policy that are the first in the 49 governments in Kenya. Murang'a University has created a curriculum to anchor the transformation thinking for agriculture in the County policies abd strategies.

It is on these that the the Economic and Social Council will anchor agriculture. You are invited to be friends of this Great County... , , , , , , ,

This site has not been updated since the new CS came to the house on the hill to tell us more about Food and Nutrition as he came when the matter of locusts had started making the office too hot.

Now we have to look at the transformation agenda from the perspective of data, open data, and the avenues that the is promoting to help realize the digitization of the evidence space in food and nutrition.

We therefore intend to walk this journey more candidly for the sake of African Agricultural policy...welcome and be our guest!

Lack of quality data slowing down efforts to boost food security 03/08/2019

The time to discuss the digital dimension of agriculture has come. The models behind which to promote this effort need to be formulated in a manner that makes them owned and used by the farmers, many of whom the challenge of literacy is appreciated. The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) is working with stakeholders drawn from policy, private sector, research, and development sectors to ensure that we do not just talk data, but the data becomes the guide to promoting agribusinesses anchored at the farmer level. We are excited about this development happening in Nakuru as we too have an initiative underway in the same region.

Youth unemployment tops meeting 31/07/2019

Is that problem our education system or the upbringing of our children? When you read this...
“Only 20% of the youth know what they want to do while 60% require further training and mentorship for them to discover what business they need to engage in to earn some income. The remaining 20% have no idea what to do”...

This week am working with one of our programme partners to develop a youth employment programme in the agricultural value chains. I am tempted to believe that the challenge lies not in the education alone, but the underlying planning of our social-economic systems. Kenya is an agricultural economy. Few investments are visible to tune the youth to thinking of opportunity creation. We cannot be blaming them for looking where others looked and found opportunities earlier- in urban centers. We have to create a new model of thinking, where the creation of industries large or small...innovation in what people do at the production level is visible as one grows. I became an agriculturalist, not because of my education,l but because I participated in doing it as I grew up. I will refuse to understand joblessness because I integrate what I read to agriculture and through that I have created a new paradigm for those who want to know how agricultural value chains can guide in opportunity creation..join Our Programme for Capacity Development in Africa (P4CDA), located in my village Kangema to create the first Agribusiness, Incubation, Technologies, and Extension (aiTex) Hub. We are using goats and goat milk to offer training to youths who want to learn how jobs are created around agriculture...We are managing this interface through an ICT Center where youths can learn practical agriculture and data sourcing then combine what happens to practical ICTs. Do you want to be part of us? Write to [email protected] and we shall link up with you. We are soon to roll out an online programme of learning on Transformation Action Learning System (TALS), a combination of Gender Action Learning System (GALS), ICTs, Value Chains, and Design Thinking, broken down into modules that can be undertaken separately and independently in the Agricultural TVET paradigm. Keep it here for more information ...by the end of next week...

Data to End Hunger: 50 X 2030 Launch 15/06/2019

Yesterday marked the end of the 15th CAADP Partners Meeting.

I represented Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition and the Many African initiatives that my Programme for Capacity Development in Africa Supports. I was particularly happy to articulate what we do to provide OPEN Data to End World Hunger.
The discussion on the 50 X 2030 Initiative by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Foundation, World Bank and FAO Global articulated what their initiative seeks to achieve. We at GODAN are excited that efforts are being made to mainstream this through Nepad Caadp, which we are committed to support through our Nairobi Declaration Commitment. The Declaration which was made in 2017 has made serious inroads to support African Data and Knoweldge Agenda through our collaboration with Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa - FARA and Ypard to address this agenda through our using our yet to be launched PERFECT Africa Model!

Data to End Hunger: 50 X 2030 Launch Data to End Hunger, a side event held during during the 2018 UN General Assembly, formally launched the 50 X 2030 Initiative, which brings together a coaliti...
