8 May – In Memory of the Past, In Responsibility for the Future

On 8 May, we commemorate Victory in Europe Day and honor the memory of all those who suffered and sacrificed their lives during the Second World War.

This day reminds us not only of the triumph over fascism, but also of the immense human cost of war and hatred. In today’s world, marked by ongoing conflicts and growing divisions, the message of peace, solidarity, mutual respect, and human dignity remains more important than ever.

May we continue to work together to protect these values and ensure that such tragedies are never repeated.

On 16 March 2026, the Ambassador of the Slovak Republic to Nairobi, Maroš Mitrík, paid an official visit to Machakos County in Kenya.

The programme included a meeting with the County Governor H.E. Wavinya Ndeti, a visit to Konza Technopolis and a tour of the County Education Office’s training facilities under the strategic Slovak ODA project.

The meeting with the Governor provided an opportunity to present Slovakia’s ongoing and long term development cooperation activities in the County and discuss opportunities for trade collaboration.

The visit to Konza Technopolis reaffirmed that this special economic zone represents a forward-looking initiative with tangible potential for the engagement of Slovak companies. The CEO of Konza Technopolis, John Paul Okwiri, expressed strong interest in strengthening cooperation with Slovakia and welcomed the prospect of an upcoming Slovak business delegation to Kenya, extending an invitation to visit the city.

Konza Technopolis, often referred to as the “Silicon Savannah,” is a flagship smart city and innovation hub developed under Kenya’s Vision 2030 strategy, with strong government backing and growing international investment. It presents concrete opportunities for Slovak companies, particularly in ICT and digital infrastructure, smart city solutions, healthcare technologies, green innovations, and research cooperation.

As part of the programme, the delegation also visited the training centre of the County Education Office, where teacher training activities are being implemented within the framework of the Strategic Partnership Project in Kenya project.

Courtesy call to the Governor of Kiambu County

On March 12, Slovak Ambassador Maroš Mitrík paid a courtesy call to H.E. Dr. Kimani Wamatangi, Governor of Kiambu County and his team. The meeting opened an engaging discussion on strengthening partnerships between Slovakia and Kiambu County, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in healthcare – particularly telemedicine – agriculture, technology, trade, cybersecurity and industrialisation.

Kiambu County stands out as one of Kenya’s most dynamic regions. As the second largest county in the country and the county with the highest number of universities, it represents a strong hub for innovation, research and skilled talent. With four Special Economic Zones (SEZs), a positive investment climate and its strategic proximity to Nairobi, Kiambu offers excellent prospects for business development and international cooperation.

During the visit, Ambassador Mitrík also toured Tatu City, an impressive and fast-growing 2,000-hectare Special Economic Zone that is rapidly becoming a center for industry, technology, education, and modern living. Once completed, the development will accommodate up to 250,000 residents, making it a remarkable example of forward-looking urban planning and investment potential.

The program also included a visit to Dormans Coffee, a well-established company founded in 1950 and one of Kenya’s leading coffee producers for both the domestic market and export. Dormans exports approximately 10,000 tons of green coffee beans annually, including specialty coffee. Discussions focused on possible cooperation with Slovak companies, followed by a tour of the factory where the Ambassador learned more about the company’s coffee processing and export operations.

These engagements showcased the vibrant economic potential of Kiambu County and the many avenues for deepening Slovakia–Kenya cooperation through business, innovation, and investment.

Presentation of the Letters of Credence to the Republic of Rwanda

On Friday, March 6, Ambassador Maroš Mitrík presented his Letters of Credence to H.E. President Paul Kagame, officially assuming his role as Ambassador to the Republic of Rwanda.

Our bilateral relations are positive and Slovakia is committed to further strengthening this partnership in the years ahead.

Both countries see strong potential for expanding cooperation across a wide range of areas. Promising opportunities exist in cybersecurity, healthcare, digitalisation, innovation, defense, as well as agriculture and sustainable development. By building on these shared priorities, Slovakia and Rwanda can work together to promote prosperity, resilience and sustainable growth.

We look forward to deepening our dialogue, strengthening ties between our institutions and people and exploring new avenues of collaboration that will benefit both nations.

This Wednesday, March 4, Ambassador Maroš Mitrík visited the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where he walked through the history preserved within its walls and paid his deepest respects to the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Standing in this place of remembrance, our hearts bleed for the countless lives lost and for the unimaginable suffering endured by the people of Rwanda. The memorial is not only a tribute to those who perished, but also a powerful reminder of the consequences of hatred and division.

Yet alongside the sorrow, one cannot help but profoundly admire the remarkable journey Rwanda has undertaken since those dark days. The unity, resilience, and determination of the Rwandan people stand as an inspiration to the world. From tragedy has emerged a nation committed to reconciliation, dignity, and a shared future.

We remember, mourn, and honor the victims. At the same time, we reaffirm our respect for Rwanda’s path toward healing and our admiration for the strength of its people. May remembrance continue to guide us all toward greater humanity, solidarity, and peace.
