We asked young people across South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, and Nigeria about their university experience. Their message was simple: education isn't preparing them for work.

But they're not just raising the problem - they're showing up in student councils, policy committees, and university governing bodies to fix it. 75% of the people who shaped our research were young people themselves, because this conversation has to start with them.

Our research captures their experiences and what needs to change.

Millions of young people across Africa are graduating without the skills employers need.

Outdated curricula, limited resources, and a disconnect between education and the real world are holding them back, and the numbers tell the story.

Over half of African youth are undereducated, and nearly a third lack the practical skills the job market demands.

We believe international partnerships between universities can change this. Our research looks at how collaborative efforts between UK and African institutions are already making a difference — and where we need to do more.
