Kuruwitu Conservation & Welfare CBO Established in 2003 to protect the fragile reef & diverse marine life at Kuruwitu, Kenya Coast.

As the first community-run marine initiative on the Indian Ocean, it has become a role model in grassroots conservation & sustainability. 'Conserving to Restore the Promise of the Sea'

The Kuruwitu-Vipingo marine area, situated on the northern coast of Kenya, is characterised by sandy beaches, coral reefs, lagoons, ancient coastal forests, cliffs, caves and mangrove swamps. The marine waters are an important biodiversity hotspot with a distinct coral reef ecosystem and diverse surrounding area - home to many species of endangered ornamental fish and sea turtles as well as large variety of birds, fish, mammals, plants and other organisms. Our aim at KCWA is to manage sustainable marine resources for the local fishing community and environment as a whole, as well as to set 'best practise' for the expansion of marine conservation projects along the Kenya coast.

We had the pleasure of joining Bureni Turtle Marine Conservation for a rewarding beach clean-up, followed by the unforgettable experience of witnessing the release of newly hatched sea turtles into the ocean. It was a powerful reminder of the importance of working together to protect our beaches, conserve marine biodiversity, and give these incredible creatures a better chance of survival.

Today, we were proud to participate in the Our Ocean Conference at PrideInn Paradise Beach Resort & Spa, where leaders, conservationists, researchers, and communities have come together to champion sustainable ocean management and the blue economy. The conference is part of the 11th Our Ocean Conference being held in Mombasa and Kilifi from 16–18 June 2026 under the theme “Our Ocean, Our Heritage, Our Future.”
As we share ideas and strengthen partnerships, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting marine biodiversity, restoring coral reefs, conserving sea turtles, and empowering coastal communities for generations to come.
Every action counts. Together, we can create a healthier ocean and a more sustainable future.
