PS MWADIME SEEKS MPS' BACKING FOR ILO CONVENTIONS ON DOMESTIC WORKERS AND WORKPLACE HARASSMENT
MOMBASA, Oct. 23, 2026.
The Principal Secretary for Labour and Skills Development, Shadrack Mwadime, today asked the National Assembly's Departmental Committee on Labour to support the ratification of ILO Conventions 189 and 190, which cover domestic workers and violence and harassment at work.
Speaking at a retreat with the committee chaired by Hon. Ken Chonga, MP Kilifi South, at the Sarova Whitesands Hotel, Mr. Mwadime said ratification will run alongside the ongoing Labour Law Review. He said Kenya must consider both the protections the conventions promise and the institutional, financial and administrative arrangements needed to implement them.
He also said the Child Labour Policy, 2015, now under review, has been tabled for public participation and will be brought to Parliament for approval.
The PS presented the Fundi Locator, a labour market service leveling on digital platforms to connect skilled artisans to the labour market. The initiate provides opportunities for the informal sector players to build their client base through provision of competent services while allowing households and businesses to find reliable service providers. He urged the members of parliament to prompt the service in their constituencies
On labour migration, he pointed to the Overseas Employment Management Bill as a chance to protect Kenyan migrant workers through the Kenya Migrant Workers Welfare Fund, Airport Desks and a one-stop shop for agencies.
"These three agenda items share a common objective: improving access to opportunities while ensuring that the dignity, rights and welfare of workers remain central to our interventions," Mr. Mwadime said.
