The Ministry of Tourism, Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives (MTCIC), through its Metrology Division, hosted the 2026 Metrology Day in honour of the World Metrology Day celebrated globally on 20 May 2026. This year marks the 151st anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875, which laid the foundation for the globally harmonized system of measurement used today.
Activities conducted as part of the celebration included the Nimaua Akea social media awareness campaign, roadshow awareness activities on this year’s theme from Bonriki to Betio, and the concluding workshop led by the Officer-in-Charge of MTCIC.
This year’s event was both successful and impactful in promoting the 2026 World Metrology Day theme, “Building Trust in Policy Making,” or in the Kiribati vernacular, “Boutokaan Kainibaire Aika Eti, Koaua ao n Onimakinaki.” The activities highlighted the importance of accurate and reliable measurements in supporting effective policies, consumer protection, trade, safety, and public confidence.
The closing workshop, held at the MTCIC Boardroom on Friday, 22 May 2026, brought together key stakeholders from various metrology-related sectors, along with representatives from all divisions and centres of the Ministry. The workshop served as the official closing of the 2026 Metrology Day celebrations and provided an important opportunity for Metrology staff to deliver further awareness and clarification on this year’s theme.

Kiribati Reviews and Updates its Kiribati Trade Policy Framework 2017-2027
24 – 30 March, 2026 - The MTCIC convened a national workshop on 24th March at the YCL Conference Room to review and update the Kiribati Trade Policy Framework (KTPF) 2017 – 2027.
The workshop brought together representatives from Government agencies, the private sector, and Non-Government Organizations from the AMAK, Te Toa Matoa and KANGO. It marked a critical step in ensuring that Kiribati’s trade policy remains relevant, responsive, and aligned with national priorities, evolving global trade dynamics, and the country’s development aspirations under the KV20.
In opening the workshop, the Assistant Secretary (AS) Ms. Kaboterenga Ruaia emphasized that the Trade Policy Framework is fundamentally about how Kiribati leverages trade to improve the livelihoods of its people. She highlighted that the review is not merely a technical update, but a strategic opportunity to ensure the framework is practical, focused, and implementable within the Kiribati context.
Ms. Ruaia further underscored the importance of aligning the updated framework with emerging priorities, including digital trade, e-commerce, and trade facilitation initiatives such as the Electronic Single Window. Participants were encouraged to provide candid and constructive input, particularly in identifying implementation challenges, refining policy measures, and prioritising actions that will deliver tangible outcomes.
Building on the workshop discussions, a series of targeted bilateral consultations were conducted in the following days with key ministries and stakeholders. These engagements enabled refinement of sector-specific priorities, strengthened inter-agency coordination and ensured that proposed measures are coherent, realistic and actionable.
The review process reaffirms the Kiribati’s commitment to an inclusive and consultative approach in shaping a Trade Policy Framework that is streamlined, aligned with national development frameworks, and capable of driving sustainable economic growth and trade development in Kiribati.
