아일랜드에서는 세인트 브리짓 데이 전날 밤, 천이나 옷을 밖에 걸어두는 전통이 있습니다. 밤사이 성녀 브리짓의 축복이 깃들길 기원하는 상징적 행위입니다. 아일랜드에서 약 9,000km 떨어진 성북동의 대사관저에서도 전통은 이어지고 있습니다. ✨

On the eve of St. Brigid’s Day, we hang out a cloth in the hope that it will be touched or blessed by St. Brigid overnight. This tradition is called Brat Bríde(Brigid’s cloak). We continue at our residence in Seongbuk-dong, located almost 9,000 km away from Ireland. ✨

본질적으로 임시적인 역할인 대사라는 직책이 지닌 책임과 고민, '떠날 때 어떤 발자취를 남기고 싶은가, 이곳을 처음 왔을 때보다 더 나은 곳으로 만들기 위해 지금 어떤 노력을 하고 있는가?'를 함께 고민해보는 따뜻한 시간이었습니다.

Leave things better than you found them💫

This week, we kicked off a new season of Gallery Talks with a very special event. We were joined by two remarkable leaders; H.E. Michelle Winthrop, Ambassador of Ireland to the Republic of Korea, and H.E. Dawn Bennet, Ambassador of New Zealand to the Republic of Korea, for a conversation on leadership, diplomacy, and power.

At a time when the world is facing multiple crises and so much seems to be up for negotiation, the conversation felt more relevant than ever.

The world of diplomacy has many facets. Key themes included authenticity, communication, uplifting your team, the task of optimism (even in darker times) and female leadership as a special “seasoning” of leadership. BTS was even referenced more than once as a global example of connection and influence. Yet the key message that remained was:

Leave things better than you found them.

Being an ambassador is, by nature, a temporary role. This sets different expectations and makes leadership demanding for yourself and your team. In reality, very few positions are permanent, and this is a mantra we can all strive to live by. The same applies to life as an expat partner. Thus, the talk invites reflection: What mark do I want to leave when I move on? How am I making this place better than I found it?

Today, we remember all Jewish victims of the Holocaust, as well as the genocide of the Roma, and the many other victims of N**i atrocities, including those who were murdered for their political or religious beliefs, cultural or ethnic identity, sexual orientation or disability status. We honour them today through remembrance, and every day by continuing to champion human rights and rule of law.

미쉘 대사님은 고(故) 케빈 오루크 신부님을 대신해 연세를 빛낸 동문상을 수상했습니다. 케빈 신부님은 외국인 최초로 국어국문학 박사학위를 취득했으며, 한국어의 미묘한 결과 운율을 영어로 섬세하게 옮겨 한국 문학을 세계에 알리는데 헌신하셨습니다. 이러한 공로를 인정받아 외국인 최초로 이 상을 수상했습니다.

The Ambassador received, on behalf of the late Fr Kevin O’Rourke, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Yonsei University. Fr O’Rourke was the first foreign national to receive this honour, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the translation of Korean literature.
